<i>Without a Clue</i> - indeed, a first-class entertainment, full of actual wit, not just "really good explosions", which, I fear, are not on my list of criteria for judging a film, at least not since I attained majority. I can't "disagree" with people who have enjoyed this "Victorian <i>Batman</i>" - you can't disagree with taste - it's just that explosions, gratuitous slo-mo, explosions IN slo-mo, anachronistic one-liners ("Love what you've done with the place"), and so on - the arsenal of action flick clichés - just don't move me to anything but trying to check my watch in the dark. If that floats your boat, great. I guess I hoped there might be something more than that there -and there really isn't. Should have stayed home and watched Jeremy Brett. Or <i>Goldfinger</i>. And as for accuracy of period detail - a young woman of Watson's fiancée's station showing off cleavage at dinner in 1880/90? I'm pretty sure, from what I know of my grandma, that my great-grandma wouldn't have done that.<br>
<br>I'll keep my money in my pocket until the new film by Michael Haneke, Bruno Dumont, Coen Bros, Dardenne Bros, etc. - you know: something that will actually engage my faculties. All of them. <br><br>Cheers and Happy New Year to all. <br>

Dear Kelly and Phil - thanks for bringing all this Holmesiana back to my aged mind. It reminds me of the annual Yuletide disappointment of "Messiah" fans upon hearing it performed by a right-sized, period ensemble and chorus instead of the huge forces they are used to hearing.<br>

I must confess to having already enjoyed this new SHERLOCK HOLMES, despite my Hollywood-induced bigotry, relishing the wealth of period detail and FX, as well as a really good yarn, a sort of Victorian era "Batman" -- so what if it wasn't (or so I thought) the "correct" veersion of Holmes! NOW I will go back and REALLY enjoy it a second time as not only entertainment, but an attempt to be true to its origins.<br>

My one remaining complaint, and this registered more with me than anything, was Downey's (lack of) accent, combined with the ability to understand him (this may be my aged ears.) As an actress myself, I wish he had done more work with a good coach. But maybe that's me own ignorance speaking again -- I have always imagined him (or had him imaged FOR me) as teddibly uppah -- and his accent didn't sound that far off from Jude Law's.<br>

First and foremost the new Holmes movie was very entertaining. Holmes and Watson are honestly the original buddy-cop story and the fact that it comes across as a fun buddy-cop romp shouldn't be surprising! What is great is that contrary to folks who think this movie was a departure from A.C. Doyle canon, the opposite is true. Many films since the original stories departed quite quickly from the canon and introduced things that while some consider true (the flappy ear hat and pipe, for example) were actually film contributions. Holmes was anything but some boring talky detective. While Jeremy Brett will still be my favorite Holmes, I can appreciate Guy Ritchie's fun take on the character and his return to the original stories more pulpy roots.<br>

What the movie got right that people seem most offended by is the fact he is an action hero as much as an intellectual one. The books/ short stories clearly point to his mastery of boxing and a Japanese martial art know as Baritsu. In one movie scene he is seen shooting the letters "VR" into a wall with a gun. Not what one would remember Holmes for but again, this was in the stories not just the movie. He was cleary a drug addict and likely bi-polar (he had many episodes of despondence and withdrawal in the books and needed a new case or more drugs to move this forward).<br>

I think any one who is a fan of Holmes and his fun relationship with Watson, the deductions, the interactions with Scotland Yard, etc. etc. will really enjoy the movie. It is far from some drawing room mystery. There are no "you might wonder why I gathered you all here" moments but this isn't Poirot...this is Holmes, the Victorian era action hero. :-)<br>
