He celebrated his 80th birthday with a huge surprise birthday party given by his wife, Donna, and his family, where he saw his original one-act plays, </SPAN></SPAN><EM><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'"><FONT size=3>Wednesdays with Hilda</FONT></SPAN></EM><SPAN class=style81><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt"> and </SPAN></SPAN><EM><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'"><FONT size=3>Celibacy Odyssey</FONT></SPAN></EM><SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt"> performed at the Cleveland Play House. He was featured in the <SPAN id=lw_1274266926_11 class=yshortcuts>Cleveland Jewish News</SPAN> as an “elder” person and playwright of distinction. The
</SPAN><FONT size=3><FONT face="Courier New, courier, monaco, monospace, sans-serif">WAKE UP And LIVE’s</FONT> </FONT></SPAN><EM><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'"><FONT size=3>Actors’ Studio</FONT></SPAN></EM><SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt"> dedicated its 2005-06 season of </SPAN><FONT size=3 face="Courier New, courier, monaco, monospace, sans-serif">“PlayActs”</FONT></SPAN><SPAN class=style81><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt"> to Ruby. In September, 2005, Ruby and </SPAN></SPAN><EM><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'"><FONT size=3>Celibacy Odyssey</FONT></SPAN></EM><SPAN class=style81><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt"> headed to the Big Apple, where </SPAN></SPAN><EM><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'"><FONT size=3>Celibacy Odyssey, </FONT></SPAN></EM><SPAN class=style81><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt">“a
farcical fantasy romp,” was performed off-Broadway at the <SPAN id=lw_1274266926_12 class=yshortcuts>Studio Theatre</SPAN>. </SPAN></SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'"></SPAN></P>
<P style="MARGIN: auto 0in" class=style6><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt"><SPAN> </SPAN>Ruby, a resident of University Heights, was considered a late bloomer. He chose the field of writing for live theatre, because of his admiration for <SPAN style="BORDER-BOTTOM: #366388 2px dotted; CURSOR: hand" id=lw_1274266926_13 class=yshortcuts>live performances</SPAN> and their writers. He was in his late sixties when he began and discovered a hidden talent that he didn’t realize he had. Since, he had written two movies, <EM><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'">Shanghai Journey,</SPAN></EM> and <EM><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'">Murrow’s Children</SPAN></EM>, which had consideration for production. </SPAN></P>
<P style="MARGIN: auto 0in" class=style6><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt">His plays have been read at the Cleveland Playhouse, <SPAN id=lw_1274266926_14 class=yshortcuts>Cuyahoga Community College</SPAN> and <SPAN style="BORDER-BOTTOM: #366388 2px dotted; CURSOR: hand" id=lw_1274266926_15 class=yshortcuts>Ensemble Theatre</SPAN>, Cleveland, Ohio. Ruby always thanked his wife Donna, for the continuing encouragement that she always gave him.</SPAN></P>
<P style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt" class=MsoNormal><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt"><SPAN> </SPAN>The WAKE UP And LIVE’s Actors’ Studio has performed numerous plays by Ruby, at many staged readings from Borders Books to Cuyahoga Community College, to the Cleveland Play House, including the periennial audience favorite, <I>Four Queens </I><SPAN>which had the senior citizens’ audience “rolling in the aisles” after its recent April </SPAN></SPAN></P>
<P style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt" class=MsoNormal><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt">performance at the <SPAN id=lw_1274266926_16 class=yshortcuts>Stephanie Tubbs Jones</SPAN> Community Center<I>.</I></SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt"><SPAN> </SPAN>Over the years, Ruby had written such diverse pieces as <I>Wednesdays with Hilda</I> which addresses race relations and touches the heart with Jewish heritage and, <I>Sophie’s Legacy</I>, which takes an improbable look at “creative pregnancy.”<SPAN> </SPAN>In 1993, Ruby took his first playwriting course with Bob Noll, another prominent local playwright, at the Cleveland Play House.<SPAN> </SPAN>He was hooked!<SPAN> </SPAN>Eventually, Ruby responded to a “Call for Playwrights Submissions” for WAKE UP And LIVE’s Actors’ Studio and from there, a wonderful relationship was begun and continued to grow until his unexpected,
untimely passing, October 25, 2009.<SPAN> </SPAN></SPAN></P>
