In October, 2008, the Canal Fulton Players presented
the raucous British comedy, Run For Your Wife, by Ray Cooney on six
nights. The audiences thoroughly loved the presentation of the story of a
British cab driver who had two wives, two apartments and two major
headaches. It appeared that John Smith, the cabbie, had an accident and
the police discovered that there were either two John Smiths who drove the same
cab or one John Smith with two households. The rollicking fun spawned by
the massive web of deception started by John and his neighbor, Stanley Gardner,
left most people laughing far after the curtain fell.
Ray Cooney
decided that the ending of the play when Police Inspector Traughton tells John
that “he is a bloody liar” after John admits the bigamy with Stanley’s approval
was not the way this story should end. He saw it as a beginning. So,
he wrote Caught in the Net, which starts eighteen years later with John still
driving a cab and still having Stanley as his boarder and friend. John
also is still married to Barbara and Mary who do not know each other. He
still has the two apartments. He now, however, has a son to Barbara and a
daughter to Mary. The children are both the same age and they have a
fondness for the Internet. So much so that they discovered that their
fathers are both named John Leonard Smith and they both drive taxi cabs.
So intrigued by the coincidence, Vicki and Gavin decide that they have to meet
much to the horror of John. Thus, a new web of deception starts and
Stanley is drawn in again. You will have to come see Caught in the Net to
see the antics of John and Stanley.
Starring as John Smith is Gary
Gallagher, who last was seen as Leonato in Much Ado About Nothing. He is
ably supported by Matt King as Stanley Gardner. Matt was last seen as
Richard in The Lion in Winter. Sarah Price is Barbara, the liberal
thinking wife, while Anita Artzner returns as Mary, the conservative thinking
wife. Sarah was last seen as Ursula in Much Ado About Nothing. Anita
was Beatrice in the same play and won the hearts of the audience when she
climbed all over the canal boat while it was moving. Stacey Pasternak and
Josh Rowe appear as Vicki and Gavin. Stacey last appeared as Margaret in
Much Ado About Nothing. Josh last was seen as John in The Lion in
Winter. Playing Stanley’s elderly father is Jonathan Neumann, who last was
seen as the member of the watch in Much Ado About Nothing.
Directing
her first play is Sandra Schmeltzer who brings a comedic overtone to the entire
production. A great deal of the dialogue is funny but Sandra is making
sure that what does not appear in the script is also a major contributor.
That is the manner in which the actors interact with one another.
The
play will be presented on March 4-6 and 11-13 at 7:30 pm at the United Methodist
Church of Canal Fulton, 363 West Cherry Street, Canal Fulton, Ohio.
Admission is $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for seniors and children under the age
of twelve. David Van Gaasbeek is the producer and for further information
you can call him at 33-494-1022 or 330-854-4387. The crew of the play has
constructed a moving stage with five doorways on it. The presentation is
pure environmental theatre.
