to make 'permanent waves' with the musical comedy HAIRSPRAY,
which opens on the main stage July 20th and runs through August
18. Director Pamela LaForce and musical director David Keith
Stiver lead a cast of thirty talented actors, singers and
dancers in one of CVLT's most ambitious summer productions,
which features plenty of top-notch choreography by Jen Justice
and 60s period costumes by Harold Crawford. </p>
<p style="margin: 15px; font-size:10pt;
font-weight:normal;font-family: Georgia, arial, sans-serif;
color:#000000;" align="left">Based on the 1988 John Waters film,
the musical takes place in 1962 Baltimore, where the big-haired
and boisterous Tracy Turnblad dreams of dancing on "The Corny
Collins Show" TV program with the dreamy Link Larkin and the
other 'white bread kids' on the show's 'Council'. When Tracy
wins a role on the show, she becomes an overnight celebrity and
sets off on a path to racially integrate the show, which has
only allowed black kids to dance on the monthly "Negro Day",
hosted by R&B maven Motormouth Maybelle. Tracy's best friend
Penny sets her eye on the soul-singing 'Seaweed' Stubbs, as
blond and bubbly Council member Amber Von Tussle and her
pageant-queen mother Velma scheme to foil everyone's plans.</p>
<p style="margin: 15px; font-size:10pt;
font-weight:normal;font-family: Georgia, arial, sans-serif;
color:#000000;" align="left"> The original Broadway production
of the musical won eight Tony Awards in 2003, with the hilarious
book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, toe-tapping
pop/r&b songs by Mark Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman.
The 2007 film adaptation of the musical was similarly acclaimed
by critics and audiences alike. </p>
<p style="margin: 15px; font-size:10pt;
font-weight:normal;font-family: Georgia, arial, sans-serif;
color:#000000;" align="left">CVLT's production features a large
cast that brings together actors both young and old, black and
white, from as near as Chagrin Falls all the way to Lake County
and down to Cleveland proper. Lindsay Simon appears as the
spunky 'Tracy', with her mother 'Edna' (a role traditionally
played by a man 'in drag') portrayed by Robert Pollock and her
father 'Wilbur' played by Bob Abelman. The show also features
Ian Kallay as 'Link Larkin', Alexandria Marzullo as 'Penny
Pingleton', and Lauryn Hunter as her mother 'Prudy'. Martin
Parries appears as 'Seaweed Stubbs', with Kayla Thompson as his
sister 'Little Inez' and Stephanie Stovall as 'Motormouth
Maybelle'. 'Amber' and 'Velma' are played by Hayley Tupaz and
Dawn Sniadak-Yamokoski. The cast is rounded out by a powerful
singing and dancing ensemble: Max Joseph, Abby Zerull, Devon
Handler, Alison Arko, Ryan Bernstein, Kelly Aker, Andy Novak,
Sarah Murphy, Mark Moore, Anthony Savage-Williams, Marcus
Howard, Megan Astman, Ellise Seals, Warren "Egypt" Franklin,
Charnelle Coleman, Pamela Morton, Taylor Morton, and Sheila
Fitzpatrick.</p>
