A girl and two teenage boys huddle together in a desolate apartment. 1946. Victory against the Nazis. The two men return from the war, full of stories and promises. 1959. The Big Thaw and the dawn of a new era. Reunited once more, the friends raise three wine-glasses in a toast: “Let's not ever betray the winter of '42.” “Or ever come down to earth.” This is The Promise, written by Aleksei Arbuzov, a vibrant story of young love amidst the ever- changing landscape of Soviet Russia. Arbuzov draws on the tradition of Russian Realism, finding both humor and humanity in tragedy. The play follows Lika, an aspiring scientist, and the two friends hopelessly in love with her—Marat, the would-be hero, and Leonidik, the eccentric writer—through seventeen years of their lives. But as the war and the world change them, their childhood bond cannot stay the same.</font></div>
