Founder, Mary Verdi-Fletcher posed the challenge to allow her to dance at a standing level as her non-disabled partners. To accommodate this request, Larry Coleman and medical engineers constructed a device that allowed for her to dance out of her wheelchair standing at the level of her non disabled partners. The Ensemble is comprised of students who have been taking classes at the Dancing Wheels School for a number of years and have gained the technique and assurance to perform in a public setting. These performance opportunities help the students find self determination, self esteem and dignity through this exciting artistic outlet. The dance is about the possibility of meeting new friends in the eyes of a child. Ms. Meredith, the Company’s Rehearsal Director was inspired by the music of British composer Max Richter. The piece explores the disintegration of relationships both personal and professional. The three sections begin with a trio illustrating the push & pull of a fledgling triad relationship and then a shared partnering, that exams one couple’s journey from union to separation.
