Adolescent America joined the rest of the country in a particular pride as Americans, with “1776-1976” and “Spirit of ‘76” seen frequently in print – on T-shirts, in windows, on corvettes, on overly large belt buckles, and just about anywhere else. But many young Americans were in volatile revolt against the traditional, parental generation’s view of pride and power in America. “Young Americans” by David Bowie and countless other rock, folk, and R&B anthems of the mid-70s voiced a unique time for teens in post-hippie, post-Vietnam America, where trust in authority became meaningless as the economy, the environment, and society’s racial and gender relations decayed to a point from which it has taken decades to recover. Teens were inheriting a world where rivers were polluted, cold-war politics prevailed, and TV shows began the slow, brave process of showing America just how racially divided it remained a decade after Civil Rights triumphs. In youth, adulthood came early. If you ran away, you never came back. If your parents were broke, you worked. If you were out too late, there were no cell phones to call home. The freedom of the Summer of Love was 7 years behind; the Iran hostage crisis was 3 years ahead with disco and Reaganomics looming on the horizon. Punk was born on the streets of London and New York. It was the last time in America that an entire generation was divisively set against an older generation in a public, national context. With risk comes joy. With risk comes loss. Risk, joy, and loss are tremendous trajectories in this great Shakespearean tragedy. With the Academy’s production, expect a departure from the traditional and a focus on Shakespeare’s action over 4 days as it befalls young people with rather adult consequences: love, marriage, sex, and death.</span><font><br>

<font><br><b>ABOUT THE ACADEMY</b><br><br>The Academy for the Performing Arts is an accredited, half day program. Admission is by audition from a group of nine northeast Ohio school systems that include Aurora, Beachwood, Chagrin Falls, Mayfield, Orange, Richmond Heights, Solon, South Euclid-Lyndhurst and West Geauga. The Academy is housed within the Chagrin Falls Performing Arts Center and uses its auditorium once annually for an opening musical with unique investment of resources. The season also uses the renovated Studio Theatre and several classroom spaces, collaborating with high school faculty, students, administrators, and area professionals on a regular basis. The mission of the Academy is to provide talented high school juniors and seniors with a joyful, challenging and inspiring training experience in the performing arts; one that builds confidence, courage and mastery in creative self-expression and prepares students for advanced college and professional opportunities. 2013-2014 marks the sixth year of the program.<br>
