Kaufman. The show is about a man, Martin Vanderhof, who has never paid any Income Tax, and quietly starts a war with the United States government. Vanderhof’s young granddaughter, Alice Sycamore, works for the Kirby Company. She falls in love and becomes engaged to her boss’s son Anthony Kirby Jr. Alice is concerned that her wacky family and the wealthy Kirbys will not get along. The Sycamores, headed by Vanderhof (or Grandpa) are an avant garde, slightly mad, eccentric, free spirited family that invite strangers to live with them, and spend their days pursuing their dreams (like writing, dancing and making fireworks), and eating cornflakes for dinner. The Kirbys, on the other hand, are rich, snobbish, successful business owners who are very conservative in their views.
