</o:shapelayout></xml><![endif]--></head><body lang=EN-US link=blue vlink=purple><div class=WordSection1><p class=MsoNormal>Cleveland Asian Festival draws 38,000<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Over $1.7 million spent in AsiaTown<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The 5th annual Cleveland Asian Festival (CAF) solidified its status as “the place to be” each year the weekend before Memorial Day.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>CAF lived up to its reputation as a premier Cleveland Ethnic Festival with 2 days of culture, food, fun and activities for the entire family on May 17 and 18, 2014. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Despite dismal weather on Saturday, CAF drew 37,600 attendees who spent over $1.7 million in the AsiaTown neighborhood over the weekend. Besides that immediate economic impact, 93% of CAF survey respondents were likely (23%) or very likely (70%) to visit AsiaTown again in the near future. CAF organizers focused on featuring AsiaTown in order to create year-round economic impact for the neighborhood.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>For 28% of survey respondents it was their first time to AsiaTown. Free AsiaTown Trolley Tours were packed throughout the weekend and highlighted the neighborhood’s many offerings.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>A highlight of the 2014 CAF was the performances (both days) by LA boy band The Filharmonic from NBC’s The Sing Off. Their a capella stylings had young girls screaming and the audience on their feet. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The 2014 CAF also featured award-winning Modern Dance Artist Phuong Thanh Ngo from Vietnam, the debut of the Cleveland Dragon Dance Team and a Cosplay (Costume Play) performance art show.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Two stages of modern and traditional performers celebrating various Asian cultures, including martial arts, made the action non-stop. The food area featured dozens of restaurants serving various Asian foods. Families enjoyed the Children’s Activity Area, Sushi and Egg Roll Eating Competitions, inflatable sumo wrestling and more. Traveling the Silk Road transports visitors to four ancient cities: Xi’an, the capital of China’s Tang Dynasty; Turfan, a verdant oasis and trading outpost along the Silk Road; Samarkand, a center for prosperous merchants who thrived on the caravan trade; and Baghdad, a cosmopolitan hub of commerce and scholarship that flourished as a leading intellectual center of the time. The exhibition is open May 31 to Oct. 5, 2014. Traveling the Silk Road is free with Museum admission. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Named for the treasured fabric that enticed traders from all over the world, the Silk Road stretched from the far reaches of China to the center of the Islamic world. Immersive re-creations of ancient settings feature life-size models, engaging videos and hands-on activities to tell the story of the extraordinary peoples and cultures during the route’s golden age, from AD 600 to 1200, and its influence on the world in the centuries that followed. Bringing new insight to modern notions of globalization and multiculturalism, this exciting exhibition explores a time when the information superhighway was a network of land routes that stretched 4,600 miles across blazing desert sands and snowy mountain passes. The Silk Road was not merely a conduit for material goods but also for scientific knowledge, technological advances, folklore, art, history and religious beliefs through contact among peoples and cultures.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>At the exhibit entrance, visitors are surrounded by a 120-foot-long mural depicting a landscape of sand dunes and come nose-to-nose with three life-size camel models decked out in full caravan regalia and loaded with trade goods. Explorers can mark their passage by embossing special Silk Road passports with iconic symbols as they travel from one city to the next within the exhibition.
