<span style="font-family:Arial; font-size:10pt">Northeast Ohio playwright Brian Smallwood and composer Nicholas Underhill have teamed together on an original musical which premieres at Shore Cultural Centre in October. </span><i style="font-family:Arial; font-size:10pt">Remember
 the Pines</i><span style="font-family:Arial; font-size:10pt"> loosely follows the novel Germinal by Emile Zola and some family history of Brian Smallwood. Bluegrass, gospel, and other appropriate musical styles, bring the story of class </span><span style="font-family:Arial; font-size:10pt">struggles
 in a 1940 West Virginia mining town to life.</span></p>

<font face="Arial" size="2">Brian Smallwood is an award winning </font><font face="Arial">play </font><font face="Arial" size="2">and poetry writer, and has been working on <i>Remember the Pines </i>since 2001. He is the recent winner of a poetry competition
 presented by the Underground Railroad Memorial Association. The winning poem “The Promised Land” is now showcased at the foot of the Underground Railroad Memorial Station 100 in </font>Lorain, Ohio<font face="Arial" size="2">.</font></p>

<span style="font-family:Arial; font-size:10pt">Composer and pianist Nicholas Underhill studied composition at Hampshire College, Amherst College, and the New England Conservatory of Music. He has been commissioned by the Cleveland Orchestra, the Gramercy Trio,
 and the Ohio Music Teachers Association, to name a few. Mr. Underhill currently teaches composition and other music courses at Cleveland State University.</span></p>

<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt;"><i>Remember the Pines, </i>directed by Maryann Nagel, is about 90 percent sung. </span><font face="Arial" size="2">The songs are orchestrated with a 12 player ensemble conducted by Cleveland composer Ty Alan
 Emerson. Included in the band are Appalachian instruments mandolin, </font><font face="Arial">banjo, guitar</font><font face="Arial" size="2">, fiddle and bases, complimented by classical strings, woodwinds and brass. </font><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt;">The
 role of Luther will be sung by Andrew Lipian. </span></p>
