<p class="MsoNoSpacing">New England’s busiest silent film accompanist (and one of the country’s very best), Jeff Rapsis, returns to the Cinematheque to play keyboard for one of the pinnacles of the American silent screen (never before shown at the Cinematheque)!
King Vidor’s masterpiece chronicles the life of an ambitious young man who moves to New York City to set the world on fire, only to find himself slowly becoming one of the metropolis’s faceless multitude. In 1989, this moving and revered work became one of
the first 25 “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” films selected for the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry. Preceded at 7:00 by the Cleveland premiere of a mesmerizing new 12-min. silent film (with music track) by Bruce Checefsky,
one of the region’s foremost filmmakers. Checefsky’s <i>Doctor Hypnison, or the Technique of Living
</i>was inspired by a 1923 scenario written by Serbian poet and Surrealist Salomon Monny de Boully (1904-1968). Cinematheque attendee John Riddlebaugh stars and Robert Banks did the cinematography. Total program approx. 2 hours.
