con-con’s ‘The Oldest Profession’ a satisfying comedy sans happy ending

There’s a musical theater remake of the film “Pretty Woman” in the works.  Consider Paula Vogel’s “The Oldest Profession,” currently being staged by convergence-continuum, its sobering sequel.

 

The one-act play introduces us to five post-menopausal New York City prostitutes on their lunchbreak from busily satisfying a dwindling clientele of AARP members.  Facing competition on every corner, an increasing cost of living and the normal wear and tear from 50 years in the service industry, the working girls strategize on how to climb the next hurdle turning tricks.
