Berea, OH – The
Sandalwood Box, by Mac Wellman and directed by Dr. Les Hunter, will be
presented as part of the 2017 Mac Wellman Homecoming Festival as a
co-production of the BW Department of Theatre & Dance and Playwrights
Local.
The festival is a celebration in honor of the groundbreaking
playwright from Cleveland, Ohio. Widely recognized as among the most influential
voices of Off-Off Broadway theater, Wellman has authored dozens of plays, including
national and international productions. He is also regarded as a significant
teacher of playwriting. Wellman heads the Master of Fine Arts program at
Brooklyn College and his teaching has impacted many emerging writers. Mac
Wellman is a major figure in American letters and an essential presence in the
lineage of playwrights from the Cleveland area.
The
Sandalwood Box follows the story of student Marsha Gates, who has lost
her voice to the great Unseen. On her way to speech therapy, she becomes
entangled with Professor Claudia Marshall, a collector of catastrophes. This
surreal short explores trauma and violence inside a fantastical world that is
at once familiar and strange.
All performances will also include a showing of Mac
Wellman’s Bitter Bierce, directed by
Christopher Johnston and produced by Playwrights Local.
The Sandalwood Box will
be performed both at Baldwin Wallace University and Cleveland State University,
