CHARACTER INFORMATION (note: ages listed are suggested character ages)

NARRATOR: Female, 25-45 Soprano/Mezzo with extended mix/belt range, Low F# to High G. (high best to E full range Mezzo) A woman, not of the time or place of the action. The audience’s guides through the story. The narrators tell Joseph’s story with word and song. Can command the stage while directing focus to story elements with great energy. An actor with a strong rock singing voice who is strong on comedy and moves well.

JOSEPH: Male, 25-35 High Tenor, Low A to High G. Eleventh and favorite son of Jacob. Confident and charming. Joseph begins as a cocky teenager who, through dealing with life’s adversities, becomes a humble man and a true leader. We are looking for a genuine and truthful approach to the character. Ethnicity: All Ethnicities

PHARAOH: Male, 35-45 Tenor/Baritone, Low B to High G#. Egypt’s ruler, considered a god on earth. Searching for the meaning behind his/her dreams. Portrayed as a world-famous rock star. Full of energy and confidence. May also be cast as a member of the greater ensemble. This featured role at the start of Act 2 require a good actor/singer. Elvis Presley impersonator who moves well. The character is in style a homage to Elvis; We are looking for more of the 1970’s Elvis, a loose cannon, with idiosyncrasies, dangerous. 

POTIPHAR: Male, 50-70 Baritone, Vocal Range D to B. Potiphar is a rich, self-indulgent, and sophisticated Egyptian capitalist who buys Joseph as a slave. Strong character actor with a powerful speaking voice. May also be cast as a member of the greater ensemble. A Noel Coward type character. May double as Jacob 

MRS. POTIPHAR: Female, 25-35 Alto/Mezzo. Strong dancers that exudes sexuality. Scheming, Indulgent, and confident in her pursuit of what she wants, which at this time happens to be Joseph. May also be cast as a member of the greater ensemble.

JACOB: Male, 50-75 yrs. old Baritone, Low A to C. Aged father of Joseph and his eleven brothers. Strong character actor who can sing and move well. Usually doubles as Potiphar.

BUTLER: Male 25-45 Tenor/Baritone. Pharaoh’s right hand. While in jail, Joseph interprets Butler’s dreams to a positive outcome. Played by one of the brothers.

BAKER: Male 25-45 Tenor/Baritone. Head of Pharaoh’s kitchen. While in jail, Joseph interprets Baker’s dreams to a less-than-positive outcome. Played by one of the brothers.

JOSEPH’S ELEVEN BROTHERS: Male or male identifying, Non-Specific, 20-30, Various Ranges. Actors that are skilled at (playing instruments, skating, gymnastics etc.) would be an added bonus. Eleven brothers with strong singing voices, the ability to dance, and contrasting body types and ethnicities. Requires featured solo brothers for the Baker and The Butler, Country and Western style in "One More Angel in Heaven," Jacques Brel/Maurice Chevalier style for "Canaan Days," and a strong dancer with partnering ability (Adagio) in "The Apache."

WIVES: Female, Various Ranges – The 11 wives of Joseph’s 11 brothers. Skilled dancers and singers. Will also double as general ensemble in some scenes. There are eleven girls. Age range late teens to late 20’s. Must be excellent all-round dancers with good singing voices. (plays instruments a plus).

ENSEMBLE: Male and Female, Various Ranges – Actors, singers, and dances serving as Ishmaelites, Egyptians, Canaanites, and other characters within Joseph’s story.
