but may be played by creative actors of a diverse variety of ages at the director’s

A warm-hearted coming of age story set in a posh vacation colony on the shores
of Lake Erie in 1945. The story centers around Charlie, a rebellious fourteen
year old, during the summer before he’s to be sent to a boarding school. After
landing a summer job as a handy man for local artist, Anna, Charlie finds
himself caught between the clashing philosophies of his new free-spirited boss
and those of his very conservative mother.

Characters:
Charlie (age 14 - within the story) While his father is
fighting in the Pacific, Charlie is summering with his mother and sister before
heading for boarding school in the fall. Having planned on loafing &
playing with friends, his need for spending money has forced him to take a
summer job that changes his life.
Ted (age 16 – within
the story) A local boy & Charlie’s friend - they swim, play “war,” argue,
tease & fight – and of course talk about life as they see it – which must
certainly include girls.
Grace (age late 30s-early 40s) Charlie’s Mother. Trying to
keep the children occupied while her husband is at war, she is of the
conservative “upper crust” and trying her best in her husband’s absence.
Elsie (age 19 – within the story) Charlie’s older sister.
Entitled, irritated and a classic bossy big sister.
Bonny (age 14 – within the story) A friend of Charlie &
Ted, she babysits, teases & likes that boys like her.
Anna Trumbull (mature but ageless) An artist and teacher,
Anna was once a member of the “upper crust” but life experience has turned her
away from that sector of society. She sees a kindred spirit in Charlie so she
hires him and encourages him to discover and express himself outside of
society’s confines. She is appallingly honest and very direct about nearly
everything.
