May 4, 2015—The Lakeland Community
College Music Department will present a free clinic for music educators
and composers by Victor A. Markovich and Dean Roush of Wichita State University
and Lakeland music faculty members Matthew Saunders and Charles Frank on
Saturday, May 16 at 2pm in Room C-1078 on Lakeland’s Main Campus in Kirtland.
Dr. Markovich is Director of Bands
and Winds/Percussion Studies at Wichita State University in Kansas. His
discussion, “Beyond Beat Patterns: What Conducting Books Don’t Tell You,”
will draw on his experience directing high school and college bands to
help participants make the most of rehearsal time and present high-quality
performances. Participants should bring a conductor’s baton.
Markovich has led bands at conventions
of the American Bandmasters Association, the College Band Directors National
Association and the Music Educators National Conference. He is a
graduate of the University of Michigan and Kent State University, and is
a native of Euclid, Ohio.
Dr. Roush is a composer and Director
of Musicology and Composition at Wichita State University. He will
discuss his approach to composing for concert band and wind ensemble, specifically
his 2009 composition “Allegiances,” composed for Markovich and the Wichita
State Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and will be joined by Markovich, Saunders,
and Frank for a panel discussion.
Roush has received grants from
the National Science Foundation for his work with computer music and his
work has been performed internationally and recorded on the Orion label,
and won the 2002 William D. Revelli Memorial Band Composition Contest for
his work “Illuminations.” He holds degrees from Ohio University,
Bowling Green State University and The Ohio State University.
Dr. Saunders is chair of the music
department at Lakeland Community College. Frank is the former music
department chair and director of the 75-member Lakeland Civic Band, which
performs a variety of music, included newly composed and commissioned works,
and is the recipient of the American Bandmasters Association’s Sudler
Scroll recognizing excellence in community bands.
Markovich will conduct the Lakeland
Civic Band in in Roush’s “Allegiances” on their concert on Sunday, May
17 at 4pm in the Wayne L. Rodehorst Performing Arts Center.
