Karamu House, Inc.  Starts A New Chapter With Filming of First Film Through Karamu Films

Karamu House, Inc. starts a new chapter with its inaugural filming production through Karamu Films this weekend (Friday, August 21 through Sunday, August 23) in and around the Karamu facility (2355 E. 89th Street, Cleveland).

A large interactive, festive scene is being filmed on Saturday, August 22 starting at noon and the media is invited to the scene filming. This scene takes place in the Karamu parking lot as a festive party with a live band, additional entertainment, food vendors, and a few surprises.  Many of the Karamu friends and neighbors will be ‘extras’ in this scene.

The film ‘Man in the Box’ is being produced and coordinated by David Thomas (Karamu Board member and entertainment attorney) and Terrence Spivey (Karamu Artistic Director).  Many local actors are involved in the production, including Leon Bibb and Peter Lawson-Jones.  Dr. Mary Weems, PhD, wrote the script for the film.

What happens when an ordinary sized refrigerator box suddenly lands in an African American neighborhood and brings a community together? This lighthearted family fun movie explores the dynamics of relationships and community. From this mysterious gift, neighbors begin to talk, friendships are developed and community is given the greatest gift of all. Thomas and Spivey plan to enter the short film in this year’s Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival, and other film festival throughout the United States, including the Sundance Film Festival.  This is the first initiative for Karamu Films.
