Position Description – Part Time Music Education Coordinator

 

The part-time (15 hrs./wk.) Music Education Coordinator will help to develop, implement and evaluate new, affordable opportunities for community members to participate in BSMA’s music education programming, such as musicianship classes, ensembles of various sizes and performances. Current programming takes place offsite through active and growing community partnerships and at BSMA’s facility (private lessons, youth drum corps). Reports to Executive Director.

 

Key Responsibilities include:

·      Create, facilitate and promote new ensemble learning opportunities involving current and future BSMA instrumental music students, instructors and other community members, in response to documented needs, interest and resources.

·      Develop, pilot and promote free musicianship classes, working closely with BSMA instructors.

·      Schedule and coordinate BSMA music students to perform in the community solo and/or in ensembles, working with parents and others to facilitate transportation. Field other community requests for performances by BSMA students.

·      Develop series of educational music concerts to be presented at BSMA and other Slavic Village venues, working with partners such as Cleveland Institute of Music Community Outreach program, and Cleveland International Piano Competition’s ArtsConnect program, and others.

·      Update and maintain BSMA’s inventory of teaching instruments; monitor storage, tunings and repairs, and locate additional instruments as needed (either through donation or purchase).

·      Help to develop and implement evaluation of new ensembles and music classes.

Additional responsibilities include:

·      Help track ensemble participation and audience numbers for grant applications and reports.

·      Provide brief written updates for monthly Board meetings.

·      Work with BSMA’s Community Outreach Coordinator to enhance music education offerings and instruction at partner sites.

·      Assist with development of music education program budget.

·      Assist with photographic and video documentation of concert programs.

·      Assist with publicizing BSMA’s music education programs via social media, print media and community fliers.

·      Assist with recruiting and supervising ensemble and concert program volunteers and interns.

·       Keep current on field of community music education and related best practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

·        Bachelor’s degree in music or music education.

·        At least 2 years administrative experience, preferably at the program level in a community-based arts organization.

·        Attentive to detail, flexible and capable of juggling multiple priorities.

·        Strong oral, written and interpersonal communications skills.

·        Ability to embrace and champion music education within a broad range of musical forms, from traditional to contemporary, as well as within a diverse community setting.

·        Ability to establish effective and professional working relationships with diverse populations as well as non-arts sector organizations and individuals with varying levels of expertise and perspectives.

·        Direct music teaching experience is a plus.
