The Department of Theatre and Dance at Baldwin Wallace University
presents fyoo-zhen '19 – The Shock of the
News, directed by Sara Whale with choreography by MaryPat Dorr, Breanna
Pacek, Mawusi Nenonene, and Sara Whale.
Each
year aspiring choreographers from Baldwin Wallace University’s Dance Program are
chosen to participate in a collaborative, creative process that results in
their work being presented in fyoo zh en, the Department of Theatre and Dance’s
annual dance concert. The developing artists are tasked with working alongside
the director to collectively create a full-length work that takes its
inspiration from a BW faculty member’s academic research.
In collaboration with Dr. Brian Monahan of BW Sociology and
Criminal Justice, this choreographic exploration examines how the productions
of the mainstream news media influence our perceptions of social reality. Using
Dr. Monahan’s book, The Shock of the News, Media Coverage and the Making of
9/11 as a starting point, the piece uses bold, physical movement to illustrate
the disturbing trend in America’s mainstream news media, in which media
resources and audience attention are becoming increasingly oriented towards
news that is fashioned into long-running ‘serialized dramas’ that bear greater
resemblance to popular fiction than to journalism.
Content Advisory: Much of the
material in this production (visual, and/or auditory) references events and the
aftermath that occurred in New York on September 11, 2001 and may be upsetting
to some viewers.
