Monday October 12 Singers Only 7:00 pm-9:00pm
Tuesday October 13 Singers/Dancers 7:00 pm-9:00pm

AUDITION PREPARATION
Karamu is looking for Singers ages 18 years or older. Singers must prepare 1 Contemporary
Gospel song of your choosing. Not to exceed 1 Minute.Singers must also be prepared to sing
acappella if asked. An accompanist will be provided. Please come prepared for light
movement. Th ose that are auditioning for Dance must come dressed and prepared for movement.
Please be prepared to stay for the entire audition time.

All who are auditioning must bring a Headshot and Resume’.

ABOUT THE PLAY
Karamu alum Langston Hughes’ classic “Black Nativity” is back just in time for time for the
100th anniversary celebration aft er being absent from Karamu since 2012. Black Nativity is a
retelling of the classic Nativity story with an entirely African American cast. Sung in gospel
style, mingled with modern and classical dance styles. Originally written by Langston
Hughes, the show was first performed Off -Broadway on December 11, 1961, and was one
of the fi rst plays written by an African American to be staged there. Th e show had a successful
tour of Europe in 1962, one of its appearances being at the Spoleto Festival of Two
Worlds in Italy.Black Nativity has been performed annually in Boston, Massachusetts, at
Tremont Temple since 1969. Black Nativity Has been a holiday classic at Karamu since 1980.

REHEARSALS
Consists of a 8 week rehearsal schedule, 3-6 time per week. Th e cast will receive
a Rehearsal schedule by the fi rst cast meeting or fi rst rehearsal.
