CLEVELAND, OH — Cuyahoga Community College’s Metro Campus Theatre Arts program proudly presents Sometimes the Rain, Sometimes the Sea by Julia Izumi, a whimsical and heartfelt exploration of unrequited love and the myths we create around it. The production is directed by Ricky Quintana.
In this playful and quirky loose adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, audiences meet a Little Rain Cloud who unexpectedly falls in love with a human. Parallel to this tale, a writer named Dolan (modeled on Andersen himself) reveals his own struggles with love, longing, and the stories we tell to understand them. Blending magical realism with emotional honesty, the play examines love’s joy, ache, and volatility. Playwright Julia Izumi’s imaginative work offers a fresh take on a classic story, celebrating the humor and heartbreak of love in its many forms.
