Commemorative,
is
a play and multi-media presentation that depicts the personal history of four
Cleveland, Ohio, Tuskegee Airmen, CPL Roy Richardson, the late Lt. Col Clarence
Jamison, the late SSG Thomas Austin, the late Cpl. James Travis, sharing their
WW II experiences. Commemorative was compiled and written by local playwright Vickie
L. Williams who generally writes plays based on social interest and newsworthy
issues.
During World War II there were over
fifteen thousand Tuskegee Airmen who were part of a government experiment to
see if colored men were competent enough to fly. That fifteen thousand included pilots,
engineers, gunners, and many more technical and support service members. Not only did the Tuskegee Airmen prove they
were competent, they had broken records during World War II that earned them
the Distinguished Service Medal and that paved the way to equality in the
United States military. Now, in 2015, there
are a few hundred of them surviving nationwide and only one of them in
Cleveland, Ohio.
