CHURCH OF THE SAVIOUR PRESENTS Bach Cantata #131 Aus der Tiefe (Out of the Deep)

Sunday, April 24, at 2:30 p.m. Church of the Saviour presents Bach’s Cantata # 131 Aus der Tiefe (Out of the Deep) performed in German by our Chancel Choir, organ and professional chamber orchestra under the direction of Judith Higbee with organist Robert Day. Vocal soloists are Jonathan Short, tenor and Stephen diLauro, bass.

Cantata #131 is one of Bach's oldest surviving cantatas, probably composed in 1707 when Bach was only 22 years old.  It was commissioned by a friend of Bach’s who was the pastor of St. Mary's Church in Mühlhausen most likely to bring hope to the town which had just suffered a catastrophic fire that destroyed more than 300 houses.

Seven other music ensembles at Church of the Saviour will also participate in this free hour-long celebration of praise.  A special piece entitled As the Wind Song involving 5 octaves of handbells, full choir, flute solo and percussion will be presented. The Agape Choir (youth) presents a Caribbean-flavored piece called Fill-A Me Up! and GOOD NEWS shares André Thomas’ lively arrangement of the spiritual Until I Found the Lord. The Flute Ensemble directed by Virginia Steiger will play Dance of the Blessed Spirits and the Bells of the Saviour also directed by Mrs. Steiger will play Sanna, Sannanina (Holy, Most Holy Lord). Emma Bartz leads the Carol Choir and the Gospel Choir directed by Brian Smart will bring down the house!

A free-will offering will be accepted.
