OBLATUS

A new play by Diana Lueptow

Directed by Lenora Inez Brown

 

Synopsis

In a time in which sin and its punishment are real, a famous woman refuses to accept political penalty for standing on principle and what she says is the law of God. Set in 12th century Germany, Oblatus finds the great abbess, intellectual, and composer Hildegard of Bingen as she defies church leaders in a battle of wills from which she refuses to retreat.

Cast (All Roles are Open)

 

HILDEGARD (female, 30+-60s, able to show maturity/age), head of Rupertsberg female monastery, European intellectual, medic, naturalist, composer, playwright. In the service of the Church since a child. Now an old woman, although vigorous.

 

V (female, 20+-40s, movement skills), appears as counterpart to Hildegard in their scenes, speaking only to her. Alter-ego and gadfly who represents motivations/history of Hildegard. Has creative leeway in stage actions.

 

SISTER/TOWNSWOMAN/BOY/YOUNG HILDEGARD (female, 18-40, slight), nun of indeterminate age, older BOY who assists beer seller, non speaking roles as spectator and Hildegard as child/adolescent. 

 

CHRISTIAN, ARCHBISHOP OF MAINZ/BEER SELLER/SEXTON/PRELATE (male, 30+, robust), political/religious leaders, working class keeper of grounds at Rupertsberg and beer hauler. 

 

SCRIBE-ASSISTANT/PRELATE/PRIEST (male, 20+), various clerics.

 

 

Logistics


There will be 2-3 rehearsals in Cleveland between February 5 and 13. The reading will be on  Saturday, February 15 at 3:00 pm at the Creative Space at Waterloo Arts, 397 East 156th Street, Cleveland.


This is an unpaid position, but a great chance to be a part of a new play!
