Really Rosie
A Musical
Book & Lyrics by Maurice Sendak
Music by Carole King
Directed by Joanna May Hunkins
Music Direction by Ben Malkevitch
Children’s author Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) uses characters from his 1962 Nutshell Libraries to create a day in the life of young Rosie and her friends as their imaginations run wild on a hot summer day in front of a Brooklyn stoop. Pop icon Carole King (“Natural Woman”, “Beautiful”) composed the original rock score for the 1975 TV special and 1980 Off Broadway hit that has become beloved by generations. Much like the Peanuts gang in “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown”, all of the kids can be played by young adults and all of the actors work together as a tight ensemble of principal roles.
For this production we will be seeking singing actors age 14-30.
Available Roles:
Rosie – loves to sing and dance; she’s the sassiest kid on the block and the leader of the group
Kathy – Rosie’s sidekick; somewhat awkward, but always happy to go along with Rosie’s plan
Alligator – clueless, but lovable; could be played by a male or female
Johnny – intellectual beyond his years and a bit anti-social because of it
Pierre – a spoiled brat who bullies everyone, but deep down loves his friends
Chicken Soup – Rosie’s annoying little brother who tags along with the older kids
