Karamu House, the oldest producing black theatre in the country is seeking Assistant Stage Managers (ASM) for the 2021-2022 Season. Hiring will take place on an ongoing basis throughout the season. ASM’s report to the Director of Production and the Production Stage Manager and work as a member of the technical crew assisting the Stage Manager with any and all stage management responsibilities during rehearsals and performances for Karamu’s 4 show mainstage season as well as productions and special events for other departments throughout the organization. Rehearsal and performance hours are typically Tuesday through Friday evenings and weekends.  

 DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 
-Assist the Stage Manager for all mainstage productions. Specific duties per show will vary but generally include but are not limited to: 
- create actor packets and their contents, tape out the ground plan, prepare/restock the rehearsal hall, attend production meetings. 
-Rehearsals: make coffee and tidy up hospitality station; sweep, mop, pre-set props and set for beginning of rehearsal; create and update prop tracking and scene shift paperwork; be on book; stand by for scene shifts and scene resets; clean any necessary props at the end of rehearsal. 
-Designer Run / Prop Load Out / Moving to the Theater: provide the most updated paperwork to the Props Manager and Run Crew. 
-Coordinate, organize, and run any and all backstage traffic, scenic moves, and/or choreography to ensure the safety of actors and technicians; train run crew on backstage tracking and job responsibilities. 
-Assist the Stage Manager and Props Manager with strike. 
-Assist with Covid-19 safety protocols

-Secondary skills in any technical area (wardrobe, lights, sound, video, etc.) is beneficial 

-Ability to troubleshoot and adapt throughout the rehearsal and performance process. 

-Comfortable working at heights on ladders, lifts, fly rail and grid. 

-Ability to lift/push/pull up to 40 pounds and work in low light situations. 

-Possess a positive work ethic and collaborative spirit 
-COVID vaccination strongly recommended  
 

Education and Experience 
-A Bachelor’s Degree in theatre, a related field, or equivalent experience is required 
-Must have previous experience in stage management 
 
Job Types: Seasonal per show (September-June) 
 
Compensation: Stipend based on show needs and experience
