ADF in CLE Summer Dance Festival Kicks off This Sat. with BalletX & Free Classes!
Presented by DANCECleveland 

July 23- August 10th

Workshop: July 23-26 at Cleveland State University

·         ADF Faculty-led workshop

·         4 days of instruction from 9 am – 5 pm

·         Dance instruction in styles including modern with inspiration from the Merce Cunningham technique, African Dance inspired movement with Ronald K Brown, and hip hop with Otto Vazquez.

·         for dancers ages 13 and up.

·         Registration is still open.

July 27th- Community Dance Day:

·         14 FREE community dance classes start at 10 am, in Ideastream, Playhouse Square & on E. 14th St.

·         Registration in advanced is encouraged.

·         free local studio dance showcase in the Allen Theatre at 4:30 pm

·         headliner performance of BalletX in the Ohio Theatre at 7:30 pm

10 am- 11:30 am:

-Ballet with pam Pribisco of former Cleveland Ballet

-Jazz with Gregory King: Kent State

-Contemporary- Bobby Wesner: Neos Dance Theater

-Master Class with BalletX

-Professional Development sessions for parents of dancers

12:15- 1:15pm:

-West African Dance: Talise Campbell, Djapo Cultural Arts Institute

-Zumba

-Professional development for dancers

1:30- 2:30 pm:

-Yoga by yoga strong studios

-Social Dances of Today with Tony Fresh

3:00- 3:45 pm:

-Best of ballroom with La Danse Cleveland

-Mega Barree with Logan Jackln of Pure Baree (on E. 14th street)

-Liturgical Dance with Edna Duffy of Duffy Liturgical Dance

4:30-6 pm: Local Studio Showcase in the Allen Theatre

-10 local studios selected in range of dance styles

-gives students the opportunity to perform in professional theatre

-Free but ticketed

7:30 pm Ticketed performance of BalletX, in Ohio Theatre

Performing three pieces:

1.)    Steep Drop Euphoric, choreographed by Nicolo Fonte; a balletic work with classical music and sounds from nature

2.)    Express, Choreographed by Lil Buck, has hip hop movements, sneakers mixed with ballet and fun music.

3.)    The Last Glass, contemporary choreography by Mathew Neenan,

Music by Beirut, Indie rock, folk music, playful, light piece.

 

Who is BalletX?

- Philadelphia based ballet company highly regarded for versatile dancers and contemporary choreography.

-Favorite of the Veil International Dance Festival.

-Artistic Director is Christine Cox. (Was previously a dancer with Pennsylvania Ballet)

-DANCECleveland Last Presented the Company in Akron in 2013.

AFTER THE BALLET X SHOW at 9 pm-  Silent Disco on US Bank Plaza.

Then In August,

Malpaso Dance Company Arrives from Cuba for a whole week on the ground.

Wednesday August 7th at 6pm.

Lecture Performance event at The Cleveland Art Museum

Merce Cunningham Centennial Celebration- honoring what would have been Merce’s 100th Birthday.

-Lecture by Ken Tabachnick, Executive Director of the Merce Cunningham Trust

-and a performance of Fielding Sixes by Malpaso Dance Company in the Auditorium.

-Malpaso is the first Cuban company to be given a Merce work

 

Sat. August 10th at 3:00 pm & 7:30 pm at Allen Theatre, Playhouse Square

Malpaso Dance Company performs three pieces:

1.)  Face The Torrent Choreographed by Sonya Tayeh (Most known for her work on So You Think You Can Dance) Sonya started this work with Malpaso the last time they were here in Cleveland as part of a residency and now audiences get to see the finished product

2.)  Being (Ser) Choreographed by company dancer Beatriz Garcia

3.)  Tabula Rasa- Choreographed by Ohad Naharin, Israeli Choreographer and director of Batsheva Dance
