Weathervane Playhouse presents “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

Harper Lee’s classic story is both timeless and timely.

AKRON, OH – Weathervane Playhouse presents To Kill a Mockingbird, Christopher Sergel’s stage adaptation of Harper Lee’s classic novel of lost innocence and found courage. Directed by local professional director Jimmie Woody, To Kill a Mockingbird makes its way to the Weathervane stage February 23 through March 12, 2017.  Performances are February 23, March 1 and 7 at 10:00 a.m., February 24, 25, 26, March 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11 at 7:30 p.m., and February 26, March 5, and 12 at 2:30 pm.

About the Play: In 1960, author Harper Lee published what was to become one of the most influential novels in American history, To Kill a Mockingbird. When it was first published she was told not to expect it to sell more than a couple thousand copies. It quickly became a sensation, and now, over fifty years later, it has never been out of print, has sold over thirty million copies and has been translated into forty languages (Harper Collins, 2008). It also received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961, among other awards garnered over the years.

Set in Depression-era Alabama, Scout, a young girl in a quiet southern town, is about to experience dramatic events that will affect the rest of her life. She and brother, Jem, are being raised by their widower father, Atticus, and by their strong-minded housekeeper named Calpurnia. From the start, there's a rumble of thunder just under the calm surface that only gets louder once Atticus decides to defend a young man against the charges of a crime he didn’t commit.

Director Jimmie Woody says of the play, “This classic work’s most compelling lesson is taught to us through the eyes of children discovering a world that can be unjust. We find strength in our own convictions when we reflect on Atticus’s words: ‘The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.’”
