This farce is arguably Noel Coward’s most recognized work, and the show seeps as much in comedic timing as it does in the “otherworld.” First produced in 1941, this much-revived classic “improbable farce” from the playwright of Private Lives and Hay Fever offers up fussy, cantankerous Charles Condomine.

After his first wife, Elvira, died, Charles married Ruth, and they appear to live a pleasant, if uneventful and conventional, life. Charles is writing a book about spiritualism, and invites Madame Arcati, a medium, to join them and their friends, the Bradmans, for a séance, so that he can acquire the suitable “local color” an author needs. As (worldly and un-) personalities clash, Ruth, and the dead Elvira, haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity.
