Roles Available:
Deloris Van Cartier: African American Female, late
20s-early 40s; An aspiring performer, trying to find both fame and a place in
the world. When forced to hide in the convent, she initially refuses to embrace
her new lifestyle but learns to embrace it when she works with the choir.
Loud-mouthed, and sassy, but ultimately caring. Strong Belt. E3 to F#5
Mother Superior: Female, late 40s-late 60s; The
head of the convent, sarcastic and a bit stiff. Extremely protective about
keeping her sisters away from the outside world, which puts her in direct
opposition to Deloris and her musical teachings. D3 to E5
Curtis: African American Male, 30s-40s; A club
owner, notorious gangster, and Deloris's boyfriend. Cocky and controlling,
always on the verge of violence. A2 to Ab4
Eddie Souther: African American Male, mid 20s to
early 40s; The desk chief at the Philadelphia police station and a high school
classmate of Deloris who helps get her into hiding. Faces a lot of nerves when
under pressure, causing him to sweat profusely. He still yearns for Deloris
after all these years, and dreams of being her hero. Strong Belt. Ab2 to B4
Sister Mary Robert: Female, 16-20s; A postulant,
abandoned as a baby and raised at the convent. Shy and soft-spoken, but singing
with Deloris lets her find her voice. Her wallflower lifestyle has made her
live a shell of a life. Strong Belt. F#3 to A5
Sister Mary Patrick: Female, late 20s-late 40s; A
nun of the convent. Consistently perky, “glass is always half full”,
enthusiastic, and easily excitable.
Monsignor O’hara: Male, late 30s-60s; One of the
heads of the convent. Constantly concerned with financial matters, though soul
music surprisingly puts him in a different mood. E3 to G4
Sister Mary Lazarus: Female, late 20s-late 60s; A
nun of the convent and the head of the choir. Rather deadpan and the least
welcoming of any of the nuns, but she gets caught up in Deloris's performance
style. Raps. F3 to B4.
TJ: African American Male, late Teens – 30s;
Curtis's nephew and one of his thugs. Deft and cognizant of the fact,
constantly in a state of ignorant bliss. Db3 to Eb5
Joey: Male, 20s-40s; One of Curtis's thugs.
Believes himself to be quite the ladies' man. Bb2 to Eb5
Pablo: Male, 20s-40s; One of Curtis's thugs. A
natural follower, constantly speaks in Spanish. C4 to F5
Ernie: Male, 20s-40s; One of Curtis's thugs.
Initially thought to be a mindless yes-man, he turns out to be an undercover
police informant.
Sister Mary Martin-of-tours: Female, 20s-50s; A
nun of the convent. Clearly in her own world, “a few bubbles off”, but has her
moments of surprising clarity.
Sister Mary Theresa: Female, 40s-early 70s; A nun
of the convent, the oldest of the group. Decrepit at a glance, but secretly
packs a punch.
Michelle: Female, 20s-40s; One of Deloris's
back-up singers. Lippy and always quick with a retort. Bb3 to F5
Tina: Female, 20s-40s; One of Deloris's back-up
singers. A little thick-headed and naive. Ab3 to F5
Ensemble: Male & Female, 20s-50s; Nuns, Cops,
Hookers, Newscasters, Bar Denizens, Waitresses, Pool Players, Drag Queen,
Homeless, Fantasy Dancers
