Amidst generational and cultural conflict, his family and their community face escalating anti-Semitic pressure that ultimately forces them to leave their village and the only home they have ever known. (Male Character Descriptions) TEVYE : He is a pious Jewish milkman who values tradition and faith above all else. He is the father of 5 daughters and the husband to Golde. He tries to navigate the changing social dynamics as his girls begin to challenge traditional customs. Tevye often speaks directly to God and the audience, showing a philosophical side full of dreams and wishes. He is a robust character, with a keen sense of humor and excellent storytelling. VOCAL RANGE: Baritone LAZAR WOLF : He is a respected member of the community and butcher, but his dreams of marrying Tzeitel are dashed, when she chooses Motel. Lazar Wolf is a complex character, requiring a strong character actor and singer. VOCAL RANGE: Baritone MOTEL THE TAILOR: Character actor role needing someone who can show Motel's sensitive, nervous but loveable character. Great comic timing and the ability to show vulnerability. He is a meek and poor tailor. He seeks the hand of Tevye's eldest daughter, Tzeitel. He clashes with Tevye's idealism. He is charming and ultimately accepted as part of the family. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor PERCHIK: Perchik is a visitor and outsider to Anatevka. Actor must show intensity and unfailing commitment to his radical beliefs. He should be able to hold his own against Tevye as he clashes with him. Perchik is likeable, charming, and ultimately an accepted part of Tevye's family. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor/Baritone FYEDKA : Fyedka is a Russian soldier who falls in love with Chava, Tevye's 3rd Eldest Daughter, he is kind and stands against prejudice, representing the change in the outer world. He and Chava elope because Tevye cannot accept this total break in "Jewish Tradition" and he stands up to Tevye. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor CONSTABLE: Strong character role. Russian military official stationed near Anatevka. He knows the villagers well and likes some of them, especially Tevye. These friendships do not prevent him from violence against the Jewish Villagers and carries out the orders for them to leave Anatevka. He is part of the Ensemble. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor/Baritone RABBI: The Rabbi is the Jewish spiritual leader, mostly an acting role. He is part of the ensemble. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor/Baritone MENDEL: He is the son of the Rabbi. Smaller Acting Role. He is part of the ensemble. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor/Baritone MORDCHA: He is the Innkeeper of the local bar and is a good friend of Tevye. They are also part of the ensemble. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor/Baritone AVRUM: He is the Bookseller. Small acting part and part of the ensemble. VOCAL RANGE: Baritone FIDDLER(Male or Female) Small in stature .
