This audience-participation event marks the official beginning of a packed calendar at CVLT which includes four musicals, seven plays, and a variety of special events over the next twelve months. Tickets for the event are $65, half of which is tax-deductible as a donation to CVLT. While ticket proceeds from the theater's regular performances go largely toward the cost of mounting the productions themselves, the money raised from each year's /Murder by the Falls/ is a vital part of the theater's general operating and facilities budget. The format of the event has remained roughly the same over the past three decades as it has grown in popularity, often selling to capacity. The evening begins with a pre-show hors d'oeuvre reception featuring a wine and beer cash bar, followed by Act I of an original comedy/mystery, in which the crime is committed. During intermission, the audience teams prowl North Franklin and Main Streets in Chagrin Falls Village looking for clues hidden in the shop windows, and interview live actors to gain additional info about the suspects. A catered dessert follows, where audience teams fill in answer sheets with their best guesses about who committed the murder, why, and how. The evening completes with the revealing of the killer's identity in Act II and prizes being awarded. This year's production, entitled "Is There A Doctor In The House?", is the sixth original comedy penned for the event by sibling team Greta and Andrew Rothman. A spoof of popular TV medical dramas, the mystery takes place in the E.R. of the fictional 'Chagrin General County University Memorial Clinic Hospital,' where the hospital's Director has been admitted after a mysterious collapse. When the Director suddenly dies under observation, everyone on his staff becomes a suspect, from the first-day interns to the ambitious Chief of Staff, and from the hotshot cardiologist to the overworked nurses. The twenty-member cast parodies favorites like "House", "Doogie Howser", and "Grey's Anatomy" in a script loaded with gags and puns that are sure to keep audiences in stitches as they try to sniff out all the clues. This year's event features Cleveland TV personality Jan Jones, as well as cameo appearances by local notables including Chagrin Falls Chief of Police James Brosius, South Russell Mayor Matthew Brett, Geauga County Sherriff Dan McClelland, Chagrin Falls Mayor Tom Brick, and WEWS-TV's Leon Bibb. The event is generously sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic Family Health Center of Chagrin Falls, along with support from Tom and JoAnn Neff, the CVLT Women's Committee, Evans Printing, Chapman and Chapman, Junction Auto Family, and Sedlak Interiors. Other sponsors and donors include Casey and Signe Forbes, Vintage Wine Distributors, Gamekeepers Taverne, Chuck's Fine Wines, Hamlet Retirement Community, Jean and Gary Hood, The Popcorn Shop, Chestnut Hill Homes by Jana Lutz Interiors, Beck & Call Concierge Services, Dennis and Nancy Schramm, Tom and Louise Brick, Mary Ann and Ed Ponce, Susan and Tod White, Toni in Style, Sugar Me Desserterie, Tan Gillespie, and Paris Room Bistro. Tickets for/Murder by the Falls: "Is There A Doctor In The House?"/ are $65 per person (50% tax-deductible) and are available by phone at 440-247-8955, Monday through Saturday from 1-6 PM. Audiences for /Murder by the Falls/ are grouped into teams of eight 'detectives,' and are therefore encouraged to reserve for their entire party at once if possible.
