CASTING FOR NON-UNION FEATURE FILMING IN SEPTEMBER
Hi Everyone! Casting call below for a non-union feature film shooting in Canton this September - character breakdown and submission instructions below: PROJECT: Feature film, A Paralyzing Redemption, a true story based on the book of the same name. Will be distributed on the JCFilms streaming service and other platforms. Deadline to submit is SUNDAY JUNE 29TH AT MIDNIGHT. LOCATION: Canton, Ohio area CHARACTER BREAKDOWN: BRIAN ZIEGLER (Caucasian, Male, 20’s to play younger) - Leading role. Confident high school basketball star that goes through a transformative journey when his post high school plans take a detour. Must be able to portray a range of emotion, from cockiness to brokenness, and redemptive humility. Will endure a severe injury that eventually has the actor walking with a limp, and other restrictions. SUZIE (20’s) - Supporting lead role. Brian’s main love interest. “Pretty, young, blonde girl” studying to be a physical therapist. Meets him as he’s still recovering from his big accident, but doesn’t judge him. Treats him with love, humility, tenderness, and respect. DAVE - Supporting featured role. Brian’s brother. Loves Brian. Supportive and encouraging, but not without a few brotherly jabs too. PA ANNOUNCER - Supporting role. 5 lines. Enthusiastic basketball announcer at a Northwest HS game. CRAIG - Supporting role. 5 lines. Enthusiastic high school basketball reporter at a Northwest HS game. Impressed with Brian’s basketball skills and trying to get him to spill the beans about his future for the viewers. COLLEGE RECRUITER 1 - Supporting role. 2 lines. Representative of a California college. Trying to rope Brian into coming to their school. COLLEGE RECRUITER 2 - Supporting role. One-liner. Representative of a state college. Trying to rope Brian into coming to their school. COLLEGE RECRUITER 3 - Supporting role. Under 5 lines. Representative of an undisclosed college. Trying to rope Brian into coming to their school. HIGH SCHOOL GIRLFRIEND - Supporting role. Proud of Brian, and has a lot of faith in him. A little flirty too - obviously. Seen with Brian at an after game party, and later again, after he receives his ACT score. TEST ADMIN - Supporting role. Under 5 lines. ACT Test administrator. Stoic. Instructional. To the point. BOY 1 (Preteen, any ethnicity) - Supporting role. Under 5 lines, but first introduced as a non-speaking role. Returns a runaway basketball to Brian while he’s shooting hoops by himself at the courts. Should be able to shoot a hoop or two. Bonus if he can shoot three in a row. BOY 2 (AKA “TREY”, Preteen, any ethnicity) - Supporting role. Under 5 lines. Goes after the runaway ball with his friend to return to Brian while he’s shooting hoops. Seen twice. Should be able to shoot a couple hoops. BRIAN’S MOM (40’s-50’s) - Supporting featured role. Supportive. Empathetic. Proud of her son, and equally shares in his pain. Strong sense of faith, but definitely has an emotional side when it calls for it. All and all though - it always comes from a place of love. Should also be able to show some anger and defeat while Brian is recovering in the hospital. BRIAN’S SISTER - Supporting featured role, but only a few lines. Loves her brother and is proud of him. Concerned about his partying, but handles it gently. Kind of the sidekick of the family, but is always there for the main events. Should also be able to show some anger and defeat while Brian is recovering in the hospital. COLLEGE COACH AT EDISON (50’s-60’s) Supporting role. Amicable, friendly, but takes a stand when the boys misbehave. JAMIE - Supporting role. College basketball player at Edison. Super tall - 6’6”. Brian’s college roommate and first friend in college. Friendly, approachable, optimistic, encouraging. They have an instant “bro”connection. COLLEGE FRIEND 1 - Supporting role. Under 5 lines. Slowly pushes alcohol on Brian during his living room party at Edison. Cocky. ERIC - Non-speaking featured extra role. Seen at a house party during Brian’s time at Edison, and is addressed by College Friend 1. COLLEGE TEAMMATE 1 - Supporting role. Under 5 lines. Throws attitude Brian’s way one morning during practice, and they get in a fight. COLLEGE TEAMMATE 2 - Supporting role. Under 5 lines. Gets angry with Brian during practice and throws the ball at him - before he throws a punch too. COLLEGE TEAMMATE 3 - Supporting role. Under 5 lines. Seen at a bar party during Brian’s time at Edison. Throws playful sarcasm Brian’s way in response to his cockiness. COLLEGE GIRL 1 - Supporting role. 5+ lines. Seen at the bar party during Brian’s time at Edison. Flirtatious, takes Brian by the hand to the “after party”, so to speak, at the farm across the street with other students. POLICE OFFICER 1 - Supporting role. Leads the way in crashing the drinking after party at the farm during Brian’s time at Edison. Aggressive, firm, reactive, assertive. POLICE OFFICER 3 - Non-speaking, featured background role. Seen in a group of two other police officers who crash a drinking after party at a farm. LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL GIRL 1 - Supporting role. Under 5 lines. In distress after she, Brian, and the other students get caught by the police at the drinking after party at the farm. Has to be crying. Is aware of stakes that no one else is. LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL GIRL 2 - Supporting role. 5 + lines. Is found in distress at first, while hiding from the police, but is later appreciative that Brian hangs to protect her, along with those with her. LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL GIRL 3 - Non-speaking, featured background role. Found in distress hiding with two other girls from the police. POLICE OFFICER 2 - Supporting role. 5+ lines. Seen with two other police officers when they crash the drinking after party at the farm. Is seen again by himself, when he catches Brian’s. Firm. Clearly knows Brian, but has to follow through with rules too. BOXING OPPONENT - Supporting role. Takes Brian on in a cash prize boxing match, and has been in other matches prior as a champion. Cocky. Hasn’t lost in 3 years. (A younger “Bone Saw” from Spider-Man, anyone?) AKRON UNIVERSITY COACH - Supporting role. 5 + lines. Approachable. Friendly, but still asking all the right questions a coach should ask. Has been watching Brian’s basketball career since he was in high school. Impressed with what he sees. CONSTRUCTION WORKER 1 - Supporting role. Fair amount of lines and a couple scenes. Works with Brian as a concrete laborer. Pressures him to come out and drink with the crew after work. Despite this fact, he starts to observe Brian’s partying getting out of hand later. Has some responsibility himself - leaves a party early as a promise to his wife. CONSTRUCTION WORKER 2 - Supporting role. Fair amount of lines and a couple scenes. Works with Brian as a concrete laborer. Also pressures him to come out and drink with the crew after work initially, but becomes concerned for Brian’s lifestyle later. Still has a bit of a wild side himself, despite having a family. CONSTRUCTION WORKER 3 - Non-speaking, IMPORTANT featured background role. Works with Brian as a concrete laborer, and stays with him later at a bar than their other coworkers. Leaves the bar with Brian in his jeep, and winds up in the car accident. COWORKER’S FRIEND - Non-speaking, IMPORTANT featured background role. Friend of Brian’s coworker he goes out drinking with (Construction Worker 3). Is driving them home from the bar in his jeep when they get into a serious wreck. NURSE 2 - Supporting role. Under 5 lines. Reacts with urgency, but is more of the observer. Calculating. Comes to Brian’s rescue with the other nurses at the accident. Notices that Brian is losing his pulse. Elevates the stakes. Should be able to cry on command. NURSE 3 - Supporting role. Under 5 lines. Reacts with urgency, but is the “pivoter” of the group, when needed. Comes to Brian’s rescue. With the other nurses at the accident. The adaptable one. Observes the stakes and switches the plan. Should be able to cry on command. PARAMEDIC 1 - Supporting role. Under 5 lines. Comes to the accident after the nurses. Confident. Leader. Steady. Evaluating. Self-assured. Motivational. PARAMEDIC 2 - Supporting role. Under 5 lines. Comes with the first medic to the accident after the nurses. SURGEON (Male) - Supporting role. Speaks to Brian’s family following the accident, and, under those circumstances, has to deliver very difficult news. Diplomatic. Poised. To the point. Handles backlash well. METRO HEALTH AID - Non-speaking, featured background. Is sceen in a montage assisting Brian as he adjusts to life as a quadriplegic. DOCTOR - Supporting role. One scene, but considerable lines. Plays a pivotal role in Brian’s physical healing journey. Kind. Diplomatic, but also throws some tough love his way in a language he would know - like one of his coaches. FEMALE FRIEND/“GIRL” - Supporting role. One scene. Stops by to visit Brian at home after his accident. Genuinely cares about Brian and tries to encourage him. DRINKING FRIEND - Supporting, currently non-speaking role. Invites Brian out for a drink for the first time in a long time. ROSE - Supporting role, key role in the story. Believes in Brian and even prophesizes over him. Is Brian’s physical therapist during outpatient appointments. Prays with him after every appointment, and later invites him to his first speaking engagement. PASTOR JASON - Supporting role, but likely to get expanded. Kind. Approachable. Firm in his faith. Powerfully impacts Brian with his preaching and his friendship. “ROOF WRECKER” 1, 2, & 3 - Currently supporting, non-speaking roles. New friends from Brian’s church who encourage and strengthen him in his faith. Brian’s small group. SHAKY - Supporting role. Currently one scene, multiple lines. A homeless man that Brian meets while serving at Refuge of Hope. Invites Brian to share his testimony for the first time.
