Jack Worthing has created a false brother named Earnest who lives in the city, in order to organize escapes from his country estate. While living as Earnest in the city, Jack has fallen in love with the cousin of his friend Algernon, and plans to marry her. Algernon, upon learning of Jack’s double life, decided to con Jack by returning to Jack’s country estate under the identification of Earnest - Jack’s brother. While in residence there, he falls in love with Jack’s ward, Cecily. The story unfolds as lies become tangled and both supposed “brothers” must discover the Importance of Being Earnest.
