Walk-ins will be accepted if time permits. If you are unable to make the above first two audition dates, video submissions are possible. Please bring 8x10 headshot and prepare 16-32 bars (1-2 mins) preferably from the swing band or musical theatre genre and a one minute monologue. You maybe asked to move. Sides will be provided. LOCATION Fairmount Temple 23737 Fairmount Blvd. Beachwood, OH 44122 ABOUT THE PLAY Based on the true story of two teenage boys from Cleveland, who during the great depression of the 1930s, create America’s first superhero – Superman. The play chronicles the lives of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster through high school, including their love of science fiction, and their crushes on girls they were too timid to talk to. It details the many experiences and influences that helped develop their creation. Set to the music of the 1930s, it’s a story of struggle and hope, where two awkward boys finally discover truth, justice and the American Way! ROLES AVAILABLE JERRY SIEGEL: Tenor (Age 16 – 24, Caucasian) Male, a bit timid, with crushes on girls he is unable to talk to, especially Lois; He respects his father, but not all his father’s European traditions. Resists working at his father’s 2ndhand men’s clothing store; A huge fan of science fiction, and determined to be a successful writer and creator. JOE SHUSTER: Tenor (Age 16 – 24, , Caucasian) Male, also a bit timid, with crushes on girls he is unable to talk to, especially, Miriam; He is very self conscious of this thin physique, and follows the writings of Bernarr MacFadden, America’s first body builder and fitness guru. A huge fan of science fiction, and determined to be successful artist and cartoonist. MICHEL SIEGEL: Tenor or Baritone (Age 55 – 60,Caucasian) Male, Jerry’s father and owner of a 2nd hand men’s clothing business; A Jewish immigrant from Eastern Europe, who works hard, puts food on the table and tries to instill a strong work ethic in his son; A big fan of the Cleveland Indians; Not a fan of science fiction. SARAH SIEGEL: Alto (Age 55 – 60, Caucasian) Female, Jerry’s mother and homemaker; A Jewish immigrant from Eastern Europe, who cooks and cleans and believes in traditional values. Encourages Jerry to help his father at his store, but is also sympathetic to Jerry’s big dreams of being a writer of science fiction. IDA SHUSTER: Soprano (Age 50 – 55, Caucasian) Female, Joe’s warm, nurturing mother and homemaker; A Jewish immigrant from Eastern Europe, who bakes bread and sews and believes in traditional values; Very supportive of her son’s efforts to become an artist LOIS: Alto (Age 16 – 18, Caucasian) Female, Jerry’s high school crush; Pretty and very popular; Active in the drama club; interested in dating athletic boys, not science fiction fandom boys; Is not aware that Jerry has a crush on her MIRIAM: Soprano (Age 16 – 18, Caucasian) Female, Joe’s high school crush; Also pretty and popular; Convinces Lois to join the drama club: Likes athletic boys, but also find’s “sensitive” boys attractive; She admires Joe’s artistic talent, but can’t seem to connect with him MR. WHITE: Baritone (Age 50 – 55, Caucasian) Male, The tough-talking faculty advisor of Glenville High School’s award winningnewspaper, The Torch; Always searching for new talent, determined to win the annual state recognition award JIMMY: Tenor (Age 14 – 16, Caucasian) Male, The very young-looking photographer for The Torch; Brash and very self confident; not afraid to take on new challenges; Loves to call Mr. White “chief” JESSE OWENS: Tenor/Baritone (Age 17-18, African American) Male, East Tech High School’s Track and Field superstar; the Cleveland Plain Dealer calls him “Fastest man alive”; An inspiration to other high school students, including Jerry and Joe ELIOT NESS: Baritone (Early 40s,Caucasian) Male, Special federal agent, sent to Chicago to help that city deal with organized crime and corruption; His main target is gangster leader, Al Capone, who bribes cops and judges, but discovers that Eliot Ness is “Untouchable”; Ness later arrests Capone, who is convicted and sent to prison; Later, the City of Cleveland recruits Ness to bring “Truth and Justice to Cleveland BERNARR MACFADDEN: Baritone (Early 40s, Caucasian) Male, America’s first bodybuilder and fitness guru; publisher of Physical Culture Magazine, which promotes his nutrition advice and exercise methods; A big role model for Joe, who regularly reads his magazine and follows his advice, in the hopes of becoming big and strong MAJOR WHEELER-NICHOLSON: Baritone (Age 50 – 55,Caucasian) Male, Former World War I Cavalry officer and war hero, turned writer and publisher; Writes about his war stories, and later, begins publishing comic books in the mid-1930s: A strict disciplined leader of his publication business, who appreciates the talents of Jerry and Joe JOANNE KOVACS: Soprano (Age 17 – 21, Caucasian) Female, A pretty high school student from the west side, who hopes to become a model or actress: Takes a classified ad in the Cleveland Plain Dealer – Model looking for work: Joe reads the ad and hires her to pose for the character Lois Lane; Jerry and Joe quickly learn that she is just as intelligent as she is pretty KRAVITZ: Baritone (Age 17 – 18,Caucasian) Male, On the staff of The Glenville Torch and Jerry’s antagonist; Appears very sure of himself, but is actually very insecure; Tries unsuccessfully to impress Mr. White: Encourages Jerry to join the staff of the Glenville Torch, but later resents that Jerry is given his own column on his first day REHEARSALS First rehearsal will start Saturday, September 9th with a table read.
