New Winter Festival Krampusfest CLE 2016
Merry—or not-so-merry—Krampus! Christmas is nearly upon us and, with all its commercialism, it’s all too easy to forget the true meaning of the season. Luckily, a new appreciation of ancient traditions that smolder in the dark recesses of holiday revelry continues to rise around the world; those looking for alternatives to the typical jolly festivities of December 25th. Enter KRAMPUSFEST CLEVELAND; embodying the revived spirit of the Christmas season! What is Krampusfest CLE? Utilizing the raw, urban landscape ofthe East 55th and St. Clair neighborhood & arts district, KRAMPUSFEST CLEVELAND will be a one night winter celebration centering on the Krampus legend. KRAMPUS CLEVELAND will return a sense of mythos & magic that is missing from our mainstream culture through Ritual & Art: including live music & performance, street parade & artisan market - serving authentic German food & spirits by Sterle's Country House. Who is Krampus? This beast with Germanic roots is St. Nicholas's other half and scares children into being nice, not naughty. Bearing horns, dark hair, and fangs, the anti-St. Nicholas comes with a chain and bells that he lashes about, along with a bundle of birch sticks meant to swat naughty children. He then hauls the bad kids down to the underworld. Vision At the beginning of the twenty first century, people are hungry for authentic culture to which they feel connected. At KRAMPUSFEST CLEVELAND, an ancient & mythic presence will move throughout the space. We will gather in a circle around the fire, dancing to a tribal drum and getting in touch with our animalistic side as we honor our sacred and imaginative experience together.
