FREE Teen After-School Program Starts Today!
Stories of Struggle and Success FREE ENROLLMENT for teens 13 - 18 years old Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays September 29 - October 22, 2020 3:30p - 5:00p Register: https://www.clevelandoperatheater.org/registration Priority registration given to students living in or attending school in the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood, but all teens are welcome! Cleveland Opera Theater is partnering with Refresh Collective, a 501(c)3 non-profit arts and youth development organization, to expand their existing after-school program, “Stories of Struggle and Success,” into a 4-week VIRTUAL intensive. Students will engage in an overview of music history from the time opera originated in the 1600s to the present day with an emphasis on storytelling through music, highlighting the similarities between opera and hip-hop. In the sessions co-taught by Cleveland Opera Theater and Refresh Collective, students will 1) learn how storytelling through music has evolved over the past 400 years, 2) learn how hip-hop artists use technology and sampling in their work, and 3) will create their own beats and lyrics to record in a video at the end of the program. The program is scheduled September 29 – October 22, 2020 to allow students to submit their finished recordings to iN Education’s Battle of the Teal, “an annual, action-packed art program that showcases the hard work and dedication of visual and performing artists. As an outcome of our year-round promotion of the arts, this program builds a platform for young, emerging artists who wish to develop in the arts of their selected form, boost their confidence levels, and experience what it’s like to present their masterpieces and/or themselves in front of a live audience!” https://www.clevelandoperatheater.org/registration Contact Megan Thompson, Director of Education and Outreach, with questions: mthompson@clevelandoperatheater.org The program is scheduled September 29 – October 22, 2020 to allow students to submit their finished recordings to iN Education’s Battle of the Teal, “an annual, action-packed art program that showcases the hard work and dedication of visual and performing artists.
