THE LARAMIE PROJECT by Moisés Kaufman
WILL OPEN DOBAMA THEATRE'S 2001-2002 SEASON
Dobama Theatre, 1846 Coventry Road in Cleveland Heights, will proudly
present the Cleveland Premiere of Moisés Kaufman's extraordinary THE LARAMIE
PROJECT, September 14 through October 6, 2001.
Dubbed "nothing short of stunning" by New York Magazine and "an amazing
piece of theatre" by the New York Post, THE LARAMIE PROJECT is a
breathtaking theatrical collage that explores the depths to which humanity
can sink, and the heights of compassion we are all also capable of. It is a
tale about the gulf between ignorance and understanding, and how tolerance
can overcome hate.
In October of 1998, 21-year-old openly gay student Matthew Shepard was
beaten savagely and left to die tied to a fence in the middle of a lonely
prairie outside of Laramie, Wyoming.
The two men convicted of his murder would later claim that Matthew's sexual
orientation was a factor in the brutal and deadly attack.
Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project made six
trips to Laramie and conducted more than 200 interviews with the people
there over the course of a year and a half in the aftermath of Shepard's
death and during the trial of the two men accused of killing him.
THE LARAMIE PROJECT
is the result of this extraordinary journey -
and a deeply moving theatrical experience.
