2001 Summer Acting Workshops

DISCOVERING CHARACTER THROUGH ACTION
July 23 – August 27, 2001

Perhaps the most common mistake an actor makes is to imagine his or her
character in ‘character’ pajamas – and then try to climb into them.

A theatrical character evolves out of the tension between text, subtext and
action.  Understanding the balancing act that makes up those tensions is the
work of the theatre artist.  We all reach for characterizations that sparkle
with clarity and definition.  When we do, we can say, “I’ve found the mask.”
But every play requires a different kind of mask.  In Chekhov, it is the
juxtaposition of subtext and words.  In Shakespeare, it is the precise
production of the sound, pace and structure of language.  In Wilde, it is
the suppression of raging emotion through wit and societal ritual.  But
whatever the form, the play is DISCOVERED – not planned.  It grows out of
the muscles of mind, body and voice and rises to create an imaginary soul,
whose brief existence is entirely believable.

This workshop will focus on the demands of the play’s form and help the
actor discover vital actions that define character and illuminate the play.
Exercise and Scene work.

The workshop meets 6 Monday (or Tuesday*) evenings from 6:30 – 9:30 and 2
Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.   The Monday workshops will meet in the
Eldred Theatre on the campus of Case Western Reserve University.  The
Saturday workshops will meet in the Summer House at Nepenthe Artist’s
Retreat in West Farmington (directions will be sent when you sign up)

DATES:    Mondays*  July 23, 30;  August 6, 13, 20 an 27.
                Saturdays  August 4 and 18

*If the class prefers it, we could meet on Tuesdays.

COST:  $200.00 (Can be paid in two payments)

CLASS LIMIT:  15 Students
