Auditions
Eugene O’Neill’s comedy The Hairy Ape

Directed by David Herskovitz

This is a great chance to work with one of the most innovative and
accomplished young directors in America. David Herskovitz is well known in
New York and beyond for his ability to transform “rusty” classics into
exciting, relevant theatrical experiences.

He is certain to create something fabulous with this play as well; it’s a
one-of-a-kind opportunity for Cleveland actors.

A great ensemble piece for actors of many types, including:

Men ages 18 – 60, all races (many parts for strong-looking, “laborer” types)

Women ages 18 – 60, all races
The Hairy Ape is the story of a man, Yank, who is a coal stoker in the
bowels of an ocean liner. In that world, he is king of his surroundings and
a leader among men. He is satisfied with his lot in life until he suffers a
blinding insult that propels him out of the ship and sends him on a search
for greater acceptance in society.

Auditions will be held on Saturday December 1, 2001 from 12:00pm to 5:00pm
and Sunday, December 2, 2001 1:00pm – 5:00pm. at Cleveland Public Theatre,
6415 Detroit Avenue. Seeking diverse ensemble of intelligent performers
comfortable with strange language and nimble with words. Please prepare (and
be completely comfortable with) a short non-contemporary monologue,
preferably American. This could be verse drama or Gertrude Stein or Preston
Sturges (or Eugene O'Neill), but please no Wasserstein or Shanley or even
Arthur Miller. Please call Jeff Syroney at CPT to schedule an appointment at
216.631.2727 ext. 203. The production will run March 21 – April 7, 2002 in
the Gordon Square Theatre.
