Students present the biting satire of "On Strivers Row" by Abram Hill at 7:3=

p.m. on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1, 2001 in the Firestone=20
High School Auditorium.  All seating is general and costs $5.00. The play is=
=20
under the direction of guest director and local actress/director Jennifer=20
Jeter.  Firestone High School is located at 333 Rampart Avenue, Akron. Call=20
the Firestone Theatre office at (330) 873-3408 for additional ticket=20
information.

"On Strivers Row" was written in 1939 and was well received because it was a=
=20
contemporary play that reflected social issues within the Harlem community.=20=
=20
As a writer, Hill recognized the need for theatre patrons to see themselves,=
=20
their friends and neighbors depicted on the stage. His writings came from th=
e=20
observation and careful documentation of his surroundings. In 1940, Abram=20
Hill along with Frederick O'Neal founded the American Negro Theatre (ANT) in=
=20
Harlem.  Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, and Harry Belafonte are a few noted=20
artists that obtained training at the American NegroTheatre. It was at this=20
venue that On Strivers Row ran successfuly and was even rewritten as a=20
musical.
