Performer Retreat in the Catskills

June 22 to July 6, 2002

NaCl Catskills, Highland Lake, NY

NaCl is offering a performer retreat/residency this summer at NaCl
Catskills, our theatre and artists' residence in beautiful Highland Lake,
NY. The retreat is available to people seeking an immersion in physical,
vocal, and creative performer training in a natural and focused environment.
Each session is seven days long and will be led by NaCl founders Tannis
Kowalchuk and Brad Krumholz, with guest director, Ker Wells from Toronto's
Number Eleven Theatre leading a workshop.

Each morning, in the theatre (a renovated 1920's American-gothic church),
resident artists will participate in physical and vocal training exercises,
followed by a session concentrating purely on song and harmony. Afternoons
are free for individual and personal research (and swimming). Evenings will
be devoted to the creation of the actors¹ performance material, with each
participant developing his or her own work.

The participants will stay at the 13 bedroom artists¹ residence next door to
the theatre. Meal preparation and clean up is a shared task at NaCl
Catskills and requires all residents¹ participation. There are many unique
Catskills points of interest to enjoy throughout the residency, and New York
City is two hours away. Residency, including accommodations, all meals, and
car transport from the train station is $500 per week. Participants may
participate in one or both weeks.

The Active Observership Program:

August 2 to 11, 2002
The Catskill Festival of New Theatre

NaCl will offer an Active Observership program at The Catskill Festival of
New Theatre, August 2-11, 2002. The festival unites international ensembles
and artists who are creating exciting original performance, while following
extra-ordinary lines of research and creation. The artists spend 10 days
together at NaCl Catskills, sharing public performances, meals, and
participating in The Internal Work Exchange. During this three-day event
(which will take place August 5 to 7, 2002), the artists will share their
creative and training techniques in a series of intensive practical
sessions. Exchange evenings are devoted to moderated discussions and
presentations by scholars, professionals and writers.

This year, the festival will offer Active Observerships to people interested
in becoming involved in the festival. The Observership gives participants
access to all festival performances and events, active participation in all
the workshops at The Internal Exchange Session, participation in
discussions, and meals at NaCl Catskills. NaCl cannot provide
accommodations, but will gladly point participants in the direction of
suitable and affordable local accommodations. The fee for Active
Observership is $500. Participation in the program is limited.

Please contact NaCl if you are interested in these programs and we will
provide more information.
