I'm working with two improv groups in Cleveland who are looking for a
musical director. Both jobs have basically the same requirements:

1) A synth with a decent selection of sounds (pianos, drum kits, strings,
etc.)

2) The ability to improvise

3) The ability to play by ear (sight reading is not required - if you can
read a lead sheet, you're more than qualified on this point)

4) Experience as an accompanist

5) A working knowledge of a wide variety of popular music styles such as
opera, reggae, rap, rock, country, etc. You don't have to be an expert in
any particular style, just be able to capture the essence (or failing that -
fake it, while appearing to know exactly what you're doing at all times!)

6) A love of comedy

The Flat Pack, a brand new group based at the Powerhouse Pub in the flats,
is seeking a musician to help them develop a Thursday night improv show
which will be very music-heavy; they are also interested in exploring
long-form musical structures. The focus here is on songs based on audience
suggestions, as well as musical scenes that tell a story. Because this is a
new venture, and the focus is musical improv, the ideal candidate for this
group would be able to help the actors develop games and songs and long-form
scenarios for the show.

Something Dada, based at Cabaret Dada Improvisational Theater in the
aarehouse district, is seeking a musician to play their shows on Friday and
Saturday nights. Their show is has been running for seven years and is a
classic blend of short-form scenework, ganes and songs. Musical duties
include underscoring scenework, accompanying improvised songs (either as
stand-alone pieces or within the context of a scene) and playing
transitional music in-between scenes. MIDI sequencing ability would be
helpful, but is not necessary.

Improvisational theater is a great way for any musician to develop deep
listening skills and sharp reflexes, thereby increasing one's overall level
of musicainship. The creative and personal rewards that come from the study
and performance of this artform are truly amazing. If you are interested in
working with either of these groups, and would like audition information,
please email me at:
