Cesear's Forum is pleased to offer two one-act plays by August Strindberg;
THE STRONGER and PLAYING WITH FIRE, at Kennedy's Down Under, Playhouse Square
Center, Cleveland, Ohio. Repression, boredom and indescreet extravagance
lead to the delight, grief and knowledge of infidelity. Combining naturalism
with psychological subjectivism, these compact plays are filled with
bittersweet humor and quiet tension. The former play concerns two actresses,
one talking, one not and their battle over the heart and mind of the same
man. Who is the stronger? The latter is Strindberg's portrait of sexual
attractions and the intense power games that accompany them.

Considered Sweden's national playwright, August Strindberg (1849-1912) is
credited as one of the founding fathers of modern drama. A prolific,
experimental writer, he penned more than 60 plays, 7,000 letters and a
library of novels, histories, short stories and poems in his forty-year
career. Writing in a variety of styles ranging from naturalism, symbolism
and expressionism, his finest work centers on the battle of the sexes.
Critics point to his misogyny as the flawed cornerstone of his output, but he
was so ahead of his time that he never really enjoyed the success that his
talents deserved. He succumbed to drink and several breakdowns of paranoia
and psychosis. Dabbling in alchemy, occultism and searching for some sense
of salvation with the spiritual and natural world, Strindberg continued to
record his experiences until his death of stomach cancer. His influence can
be seen in the works of German Espressionism and the plays of Eugene O'Neill,
Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter.

Cesear's Forum, a small non-profit theatre collective, continues with its
mission of presenting unconventional, new or lesser-known theatre pieces to
northeast Ohio audiences. Earlier this season, the company presented Eugene
Ionesco's absurdist play, THE CHAIRS. Although Strindberg was recently
represented on Broadway (THE DANCE OF DEATH), most of his plays are
infrequently performed in this country. The Cesear's Forum production cast
includes: Sheila E. Maloney, Juliette Regnier, Michael Regnier, Kristie J.
Lange, Mark Rabant, Brian Bowers and Mary Drake.

THE STRONGER and PLAYING WITH FIRE; July 19 through August 24, Kennedy's Down
Under, Playhouse Square, 1501 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Friday & Saturdays at
8 pm. All seats $15.00. Call Tickets.com at (216) 241-6000.
