CCC Center for Arts and Culture 2002-2003 Season! =20

=20

The Center for Arts and Culture is pleased to announce its 2002-2003
season of programming that features three signature series of
distinctive performing arts programming. Our pre-eminent Contemporary
Visions Series of evening performances is complemented by two
educational components: the Showtime at High Noon Series of
lecture/demonstration programs, and the Backstage Series of intimate,
community-based master classes, lectures and artists in residence
activities.

=20

Individual tickets for all performances will go on sale Monday, August
19 (call tickets.com at 216-241-6000). Season subscriptions (which will
entitle subscribers to meet Laurie Anderson at a private reception on
October 3!) are also available and can be purchased by calling Kay
Coughlin at 987-2544.

=20

The Contemporary Visions Series, moving into its second season and
exploring contemporary issues through the eyes and works of artists from
around the world in a variety of disciplines, kicks off with
world-class, vocal performer/performance artist Laurie Anderson on
October 3, 2002 (co-presented by Playhouse Square). A contemporary
version of klezmer music with roots in gypsy, Greek, and Romanian
cultures is presented by the Klezmatics on October 26, 2002. Chick
Corea's Israeli bassist Avishai Cohen and his new International Vamp
Band merge Afro-Cuban, Middle Eastern, world and classical musicians on
November 23, 2002 round out the first half of our season (Klezmatics and
Avishai Cohen co-presented by the Jewish Community Center (JCC). =20

=20

Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and the Chamber Music Society of
Lincoln Center's Orion String Quartet start the new year with a bang on
January 25, 2003 as they fuse dance and theatre to the accompaniment of
chamber works performed live. Internationally touring Cleo Parker
Robinson Dance Company teams up with the Cleveland Contemporary Dance
Theatre on March 1, 2003 (co-presented with CCC's Office of Diversity
and Community Outreach) for a cross-cultural dance experience deeply
rooted in African-American traditions that will be followed by a lively
modern dance performance by French Canadian Compagnie Marie Chouinard on
March 22, 2003. The Contemporary Visions Series wraps up its 2002-2003
season on May 16, 2003 with an enlivening performance by Shafaatullah
Khan showcasing his mastery of Indian instruments, sitar and tabla. All
Contemporary Visions performances will take place at either Playhouse
Square Center or the new Performing Arts Center at CCC East.

=20

The Showtime at High Noon Series, a series of lectures/demonstrations,
is a perfect educational complement for our Contemporary Visions Series
and opens in 2002-2003 on September 20, 2002 at 12 noon in the Ohio
Theatre with Progressive Arts Alliance, a Cleveland-based collective of
musicians, dancers, poets, MCs, visual artists, actors and
DJs/turntablists. Many of the artists performing in the Contemporary
Visions Series will conduct lecture/demonstrations in the days leading
up to the evening performances as part of Showtime. The Showtime Series
is also peppered with additional hot local, regional and national
artists including the Hispana Group, Inc., which explores Hispanic
culture through the performing arts in celebration of Hispanic Heritage
Month; the Cleveland Pops Orchestra in a holiday program that emphasizes
audience participation through sing-alongs, quizzes, and more; SAFMOD, a
multimedia approach to high-energy works of music, dance and visual
arts; Bobby Norfolk, an Emmy Award winning, internationally renowned
storyteller (co-presented by the Cleveland Public Library); and a
behind-the-scenes look at Karamu House's spring production. All Showtime
at High Noon programs are from noon to 1 p.m. at Playhouse Square Center
and are free and open to the public. Seating is first-come,
first-seated. Schools and other community groups may make reservations
by calling Dorothy Hirsch at (216) 987-2512.

=20

The Backstage Series, piloted last season, returns by popular demand in
an expanded series of master classes, lectures, and artist residencies,
another educational component that complements the Contemporary Visions
Series. Our artists, artistic directors, and artists in residence
provide a refreshing perspective on the performing arts in a more
intimate setting, where our audiences can ask questions, and understand
the history and evolution of the performances. Backstage kicks off in
2002-2003 on October 24, 2002 at 7 p.m. at the Mandel JCC with a master
class with the Klezmatics. Backstage events are also scheduled later in
the year at CCC Western Campus.
