The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940
by Roger Smith

Can anyone out there remember sitting in front of the radio, listening =
to
murder mysteries while your imagination ran rampant? The mind's eye =
could
always see clearly, but couldn't always predict if the butler did it! =
And
at the end (unless it was a serial), everything was wrapped up with a =
nice
neat conclusion. =20
If you're looking for nice and neat, Rabbit Run Theater is NOT the place
to be. However, if murder, mystery and laughter are your cup of tea, be
sure to catch "The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940" at the barn on Chapel
Road in Madison. This production spoofs Agatha Christie and most other
British comedy murder writers, and the cast members handle their tasks
convincingly.
Stylized overacting throughout this production heightens the fun which
this show has to offer. With people being murdered right and left and
bookcases and fireplaces doubling as fronts for secret passages, it =
would
be difficult for this play to be anything but enjoyable sleuthing.
The acting in this production is well balanced, with no actor outshining
another. Suffice it to say that, with all the secret identities on =
stage,
it would be difficult to explain any character. These people are best =
seen
in order to be believed.=20
Bravo! for the set of "The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940". Doors =
opened,
bookcases turned, fireplaces moved - and all on cue. Not only did this =
set
look good, it all worked to perfection. Of course, in a really juicy
murder mystery, there has to be the failure of lights in the house at =
least
once. That, too, happened at the appropriate time. =20
With this talented cast under the direction of Barbara Rhoades, Rabbit =
Run
Theater proudly closes its 2002 summer season. Rhoades, in her =
Director's
notes, aptly summed up this carefree evening of good entertainment when =
she
wrote....."nearly everyone is a suspect. This is a mystery that is =
totally
predictable, completely unoriginal, and has no deep hidden meanings for =
you
to ponder." I agree with her invitation for you to sit back, shed the
stresses of the day, and enjoy the show.
The show continues Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through September 1.=20
Curtain time is 8:00 P.M. Tickets may be reserved by phoning the Rabbit
Run box office at 440-428-7092.
