'ALMA DE LA TIERRA'
A bit of Latin American magic dance its way into the hearts of the Lorain
Palace Theater audience last Friday night when "Alma de la Tierra"
( "Soul of the Land") came to town with a lively, colorful and varied dance
theater delight.
Susana and Tom Evert's Dance Theatre introduced the enthusiastic crowd to
"magic realism" through the grace, imagination and skill of the dancers and
choreography. The concert was the first in a series of events for National
Hispanic Heritage Month.
Working with minimal sets didn't stop the troupe from making a rain forest, a
village, a cemetery and a shrine seem perfectly realized as a backdrop for
the spirited and talented dancers who did everything right when casting their
spell.
There was "cute" with children Josh Colon and Alexis Generette Floyd dancing
with unaffected grace as village youngsters. There was "funny" with the
dancers suddenly turning into a tribe of chattering monkeys
( scratching fleas and all ). There was "sexy" with the sizzling hot pas de
deux danced by the Everts.
Above all, there was soulfulness and poetry-evidenced most poignantly in the
maiden's dance with Death ( a perfectly convincing figure as portrayed by
character dancer Tom Evert as a 12-foot tall skeleton in a serape) reminding
us of the Mexican holiday honoring those who have passed away, "The Day of
the Dead".
There was nothing dead about this life-affirming performance by one of the
area's most accomplished and distinguished dance ensembles.
