ABOUT THE PLAY
=A0=A0=A0 =A0=A0=A0This smash-hit Jerry Herman musical is bounding with ener=
gy and=20
appeal. Based on the French film by Jean Poiret, La Cage aux Folles tells th=
e=20
stories of two middle-aged gay lovers who run a transvestite nightclub in St=
.=20
Tropez, and their son who has announced his intentions to marry the daughter=
=20
of a local morals crusader. The show, which was the basis for the popular=20
movie "The Birdcage," was the biggest new American musical of the 1980s, wit=
h=20
an original Broadway run of 1,761 performances.

In its original inception, the French play La Cage aux Folles was a comic=20
farce, full of sight gags and wildly drawn characters. It took the combined=20
talents of Jerry Herman (Mame, Hello, Dolly!) and Harvey Fierstein (Torch=20
Song Trilogy) to give the story its heart. In the words of playwright Harvey=
=20
Feirstein: "La Cage aux Folles is a love story, the tale of a marriage of 20=
=20
years almost ruined by a son's thoughtlessness. Here is the age-old triangle=
=20
of mother, father and child. What child has not at some point in its life=20
been ashamed to introduce its parents to friends? What parent has not=20
wondered, 'where did we go wrong?' What marriage has not been tested in thes=
e=20
familial flames?"
