Rock Hall inductees include Elvis Costello and the Attractions The Police,
and The Clash, each of whom deserves to be in the RnRHoF, and so do
Kraftwerk and The Sex Pistols, who were passed over this year. In my
opinion, each of those two has had more impact on the history of music than
all five of this year’s inductees put together. Kraftwerk’s
computer-generated techno mini-symphonies (Autobahn was an MMS staple)
anticipated everything from the ubiquity of drum machines to ambient music
and every flavor of subsequent dance music. The Sex Pistols broke up in San
Francisco after only 7 US dates and before we had a chance to see them play
the old Agora, which removed all tables and chairs and reduced the price to
$5 in anticipation of pogoing punks in 1978. After two waves of punk (late
70’s and early 90’s), post-punk and a fashion style that still resonates,
the Pistols directly inspired entire genres of music and multiple
generations of musicians and fans. In college, the radio station management
(seniors) refused to let anyone play their first and only album, literally
locking the LP in a closet, instead making us play REO Speedwagon and
Foriegner ad nauseum. As a young DJ (sophomore), it was my first encounter
with censorship. But not the last. * from Elvis Costello’s (The Angels Wanna
Wear My) Red Shoes, off his first release My Aim Is True.

Lost Cleveland postcards site is an engaging something-to-do while you’re on
that teleconference you can’t get out of. A unique view of Cleveland’s
important landmarks and events as captured throughout the years on
historical postcards. Organized by date (since 1880), by location (beaches,
bridges, churches, Public Square, suburbia), and mood (hungry, kitschy,
depressing), or you can search on keywords (but “Cuyahoga River fire” doesn’
t pull up any search results—damn). You can e-mail postcards to a friend,
and if you know a story about one of the cards, send it to them and they may
post it. www.clevelandpostcards.com <http://www.clevelandpostcards.com/>

Lausanne, Switzerland is doing their 7th festival Les Urbaines in a couple
of weeks 12/5-7. This town promises to: “offer the visitor an itinerary
across the city that will be studded with disconcerting encounters,
overpowering confrontations and disorienting perspectives. A rendez-vous
with emerging artists of disquieting personality and with aesthetic
researches of total originality, this festival proposes itself as a special
space, seething with experimentation, discussion and exploration.” The Arts
Council of Switzerland feels so strongly about this that they are offering
to pick up meals and hotel costs for performing arts professionals.

On The Road is the title of a new category heading in Scene magazine’s
listings section a couple weeks back. It features out-of-town art openings
and events, all of them in Pittsburgh. Right next to them is a 1/3 page ad
paid for by the Greater Pittsburgh Convention & Visitors Bureau. The
headline: “Pittsburgh’s Your Bridge to Fine Art,” and it features a $169 per
couple overnight getaway and art events at the Warhol & Carnegie Museum of
Art, along with this line: “With so much to enjoy, it’s no surprise
Pittsburgh is one of the top four arts cities in the US…” (according to
American Style magazine). Wouldn’t it be nice if Cleveland were poaching art
tourists from Pittsburgh instead of the other way around.

Gina Gibney Dance Her new piece, Time Remaining, is not her “9-11 piece,”
but its probably as close as she’ll get. A collaboration (we should
encourage those) between CPT and DanceCleveland on Fri 11/15 8PM & Sun 11/17

Rally Is righteous indignation making your jaw tired? Or are you afraid to
speak out. Most congressmen, when asked, say that not one of their
constituents thinks we should be going to war. I heard from a number of
artists who are mobilizing to express concern. A peace march and rally is
set for Sat 11/16. Coordinated by the Northeast Ohio Anti-war Coalition, the
march will assemble at noon on West 25th & Lorain (Market Square), head
north on W. 25 to the Detroit/Superior Bridge, cross the bridge to Public
Square for a rally at 1 p.m on the Southwest Quadrant. For more information,
call 216-231-4245. Will you be there or will you be watching it on TV.

Avant Garage Film & Music Festival Fans of films accompanied by live music
know to watch out for Tim Lanza’s Avant Garage, this time featuring Cincy’s
Wolverton Brothers backing up Curtis Harrington's moody 1949 experimental
film On the Edge. Avant Garage veteran Larry Marotta, from Columbus, will
lend his talents to the WWII-era stop-motion propaganda film Revolution in
Toyland. Piranha Non Grata will attack and devour James Broughton and Sidney
Peterson's 1947 sexual psychodrama The Potted Psalm. Columbus' Sue Harshe
has composed new scores for two seminal "absolute" films, Hans Richter's
1921 Rhythmus 21 and Viking Eggeling's 1924 Symphonie Diagonale. And Go
Robot, Go!, also from Columbus, brings its retro/futuristic pop music
stylings to the bizarre 1948 comedy Fresh Lobster, a tale of indigestion.

with the dancers. At Tri-C East Performing Arts Center, 4250 Richmond Rd,

Instant Karma
Scout at Kristin & Lyz Bly’s house 11/8: Lots of fun responses to scouting,
but the one that hits home is Cindy Penter’s “Secrets of Knot Tying,” a tent
with a TV video inside, and some rope tying exercises (including a noose)
that attracted the kids straight away. Also the only piece to deal with the
scout’s lack of tolerance. (Now I hear they want to kick out an Eagle scout
for his atheism). Everyone ended up in the garage listening to Mini-Bike
perform (with Kristin on bucket and cymbal), to the tune of Iggy Pop’s I
Wanna Be Your Dog: “I look sweet in my red kerchief/Sippin’ warm pop with
gooey grilled cheese/Now we’re gonna row boats across the lake/Sweet Girls
Scouts love we’re gonna take/Now I want my merit badge/Now I want my merit
badge/Now I want my merit badge/Sew it on!”

Scott Radke at Doubting Thomas 11/8: The most amazing marionettes, (and
priced incredibly at $100-$150), no wonder the entire collection sold out on
opening night. Being in the back gallery, with about 20 of these winsome,
freakish, and utterly human puppets dangling from strings, was like being in
a room with all your relatives, even the ones who are dead. Video of rough
takes from the film they will appear in fascinated gallery hoppers.
www.scottradke.com <http://www.scottradke.com/>

Ohio Independent Film Festival at CPT 11/9: I’m sure there was some really
excellent television last Saturday evening, and while there was a healthy
crowd on hand, I’m still trying to figure out why CPT wasn’t packed to the
rafters with film lovers (aren’t we all) looking for some diversion. The
unexpected (Synapse), the humorous (The Bee), the experimental (The Shortest
Distance); the Shorts program last Saturday had it all. www.ohiofilms.com
<http://www.ohiofilms.com/>

Janel Roland @ Touch Supper Club 11/9: When you watch a DJ, situate yourself
perpendicular, not in front. Watch the hands. Janel has long fingers,
classically trained, and she teases and tickles the mixer, pulling the bass
out & throwing it back in, rocking her body hard, and occasionally picking
up the mic for some ethereal voicing way over top. www.touchsupperclub.com
<http://www.touchsupperclub.com/>

Alice in Wonderland at Beck Center 11/10: While its no sense critiquing this
Youth Theatre production, it was notable for the surreal script and the
volunteer who ripped our tickets: Cleve Mayor Jane Campbell, whose daughter
was TweedleDee and who sat through most of the show with husband Hunter
Morrison until business called. It’s nice to be reminded of the simple fact
that the arts are a part of everyone’s everyday lives. www.lkwdpl.org/beck

IT Summit at Landerhaven 11/12: Laudable in its ambition, stellar in some of
its guests (CWRU CIO Lev Gonick, PlanSoft President Ed Tromczynski) and
effective in bringing together over 300 information technology professionals
from the region, the breakouts (on How To Create a Culture of Innovation,
How to Attract Talent, Digital Infrastructure, and Business Formation &
Growth) always generate the typical responses for how to “accelerate the
development of a globally competitive IT industry in NEO through the
alignment of talent, capital and infrastructure,” such as: we need a PR
campaign—now called a brand (everyone’s first answer to all of Cleveland’s
problems), we need more money (tell it to the banks who aren’t listening).
Some great ideas did emerge: facilitate cross-disciplinary buying groups for
local IT suppliers, and celebrate “great failures” and the lessons learned.

University Circle, Inc. Annual Meeting at Thwing Center 11/12: They gave the
new UC Leadership Award to Robin VanLear, who organizes Parade The Circle,
which started in 1990 with 150 artists & 25 in the crowd; now boasts 2000
artists & 50,000 Clevelanders. Another chance to hear Richard Florida speak,
this time directly to the board of directors of UCI and 250 of their closest
friends. Turns out his book The Rise of the Creative Class
<http://www.creativeclass.org/> was the #1 book in Cleve for a while this
summer. Takeaway: he ranks cities on Technology, Talent and Tolerance.
Cleveland ranks #30 for Tech, #44 for Talent, but we finish #174 for
Tolerance. Highlights: Florida told UC that they must connect with downtown
(Euclid Corridor Project is critical); Cleve leadership must reach out &
reach down to a much broader ranger of people; they need to collaborate (a
theme of departing UCI President Dave Abbott’s remarks); people don’t move
for jobs anymore, they have more choices and they want a creative &
stimulating environment, not just large institutions or stuffy culture or
stadiums. That comment even garnered a smattering of applause.

Can Cleveland learn from Louisville? I received numerous responses about
merging the Cleveland area into one big metro-size city. Turns out that not
only does Cleveland have 3 million in the region, it also has 55 million in
a 250-mile (4 hour driving) radius, the only city that can make that claim.

Ex-pat Clevelander writes “I now live in Ljubljana, Slovenia actually, so
not only did I leave the city, but left the country too. Why I left is a
long story, but is partly due to just being kind of at the end of Cleveland.
By that I mean, just looking for something new. Among other things,
Ljubljana is a city that works. The last time I was home in March I was
kind of depressed being downtown. You had to drive somewhere just to buy a
piece of fruit. Life here isn't so much of a battle, and it's alive. All
the trappings of the quasi-Bohemian "Prague without the tourists" lifestyle
besides, people walk around, shop, have coffee, get drunk, buy fresh
vegetables, etc. all in the center. I was amazed when I first started
coming here especially being a proud product of the Rust Belt. The hatred
here for americans aside though, I've found just a certain respect and
admiration for the arts. Hell, you can even get a pension if you're a
registered "artist" with the state. At any rate, after being in a growing
city on the move, and one that doesn't seek to kill it's inhabitants, I
don't have a whole lot of incentive to go back. What's utterly hilarious to
me is that while Clevelanders should be looking to their neighbors to the
east in Pittsburgh for how to really bring back a city and make it vital, it
isn't even an issue. I lived in Pittsburgh for few months and can tell you
that city is on course and really made something of itself. It really made
me even more depressed about the whole thing. I love Cleveland, and it is
home, and understand that it takes people doing what you're doing, but
there's a lot of things that aren't anywhere near being fixed or even
addressed a lot of times. Sprawl is the death of Cleveland, along with it's
cancerous effect on the city center. Ironically enough I remember hearing
on NPR once basically how Cleveland is a textbook example of what not to do.
Museums and coliseums don't do anything. Sure, swallowing the surrounding
suburbs could theoretically benefit the city, or at least boost the
population, but I can tell you one thing, I would have to have a gun to my
head to send my kids to a public school there. Anyhow, get kind of worked up
over this stuff. Hope it somehow helps. Again, keep up the good work!”

Feedback “I'm officially joining the list of cooler-droolers. yah yah, your
coolness is the coolness.” ***** “I really like your newsletter; it is
not too long. It is like public radio in email form.” ***** “You are

Highlights: Florida told UC that they must connect with downtown (Euclid
Corridor Project is critical); Cleve leadership must reach out & =
reach down
to a much broader ranger of people; they need to collaborate (a theme of
