CTC Forum Digest
December 20, 2002

Cleveland Theater Collective held a forum on the evening of Monday, December=
=20
16, at the Cleveland Playhouse. The focus of the forum was "Communicating=20
our Message."

REMINDER: =20
BECOME A CTC MEMBER SO THAT FUNDERS KNOW THAT THERE IS A CONSTITUENCY FOR TH=
E=20
INITIATIVES THAT CTC WOULD LIKE TO SPEARHEAD AND SO THAT CTC CAN IMPROVE=20
SERVICE TO THE THEATER COMMUNITY IN NORTHEAST OHIO. =20

Topics:
1.  ADVOCACY FOR THE ARTS
    Julie Adrianopoli, vice president of Community Partnership for Arts and=20
Culture (CPAC), presented background information about the Community=20
Partnership for Arts and Culture, especially the market research that it has=
=20
conducted (and that can be tapped by arts marketers and entrepreneurs) and=20
the arts advocacy work it is doing. Consultant Rebecca Wilson outlined=20
CPAC's plans for getting public funding for the arts on a county-wide ballot=
=20
in the near future. She stressed that individual artists and arts=20
institutions will have to play a role in getting such a levy passed and=20
suggested ways to start informing ourselves about the issues and preparing=20
ourselves to join the political fray. =20

Resources:
* The "Quiet Crisis" articles in the Plain Dealer, which can be accessed=20
via the PD's online archives at www.cleveland.com.
* Information about public policy advocacy compiled by "Charity Lobbying i=
n=20
the Public Interest" at www.clpi.org. =20
* CPAC research and Northeast Ohio's Arts and Cultural Plan at=20
www.cultureplan.org.
* Cleveland City Council Arts and Cultural Summit Report, accessible via a=
=20
link on CPAC's site, www.culture4me.org.
   =20
Action:
* CPAC will be sponsoring "Artist as Entrepreneur" and "Arts Advocacy=20
Seminars" in the near future. Look for information about these seminars on=20
www.ctcollective.org or in CTC newsletter broadcasts or on Fred Sternfeld's=20
list.

2. THE CHANGING MEDIA LANDSCAPE IN NORTHEAST OHIO
    CPT PR Director Jeff Syroney reported on the closing of the Free Times=20
and developments at Scene Magazine. He indicated that the Scene's commitmen=
t=20
to expanded coverage on the arts is tenuous and the arts community needs to=20
let Scene Magazine know that there is a constituency for arts coverage. CTC=
=20
chairs Fred Gloor and Margaret Lynch outlined some communication venues that=
=20
CTC will explore this year:
* A regularly issued online newsletter that would be part of an expanded=20
website that would also include profile pages (with space for headshot and=20
resume) for CTC members.
* A weekly radio show about the Cleveland theater scene, hosted by CTC in=20
partnership with Lake Effect Radio on WERE.
* Cooperative initiative with Northern Ohio Live that would result in=20
expanded theater coverage.

Action:

* Write a letter or e-mail=E2=80=93in support of expanding the number of p=
ages and=20
the reviewers devoted to covering the arts and theater in particular. Write=
=20
to=20

        or  pete.kotz at clevescene.com=20
            (a form is available at=20
http://www.clevescene.com/feedback/index.html)

3. Unofficial topic: Against a War on Iraq?=20
Artists who would like to find ways to join with others to speak up against=20
the possibility of war against Iraq are encouraged to contact Sarah Morton a=
t=20
SMorton8 at aol.com. =20
